Deanna, welcome to our group! In between work and everything else I've got my hands on I'm reading Tribute bit by bit - and it's good so far. I like the fact that its set in a country house, of course!

Also - Happy 4th of July to you also!

Happy 4th everyone!
Karen, thanks for the welcome.I have read the first two books by J.D. Robb. They're very different from her writing as Nora Roberts. I confess, I did not like them, they're futuristic/suspense/murder/mystery, if I remember correctly the major player in them is a female police detective and they're all titled "___________ in Death", just not my thing.
I think I own a copy of Tribute, so I'll dig it out, I have so many boxes of books in this house, my hubby would say I could open a store! Ha Ha!

I would like to join in. I just read all the posts and made a list of books read. I may not get to all of them, but like to keep a running list. Also, I have a huge stack of books from the library right now including Betty Whites AutoBio. But I will join in asap!

See, I told you I was busy! So busy that I had a brain fart and didn't offer a link to August's (is August really next month?! where has summer gone?) selection. I see where I was even on here early this month and didn't catch my goof.

So, without further adieu here it is:

http://www.goodreads.com/list/show/385.Best_books_of_August_2008

And because it's late I'll give the group till the end of this month to post the results for August AND offer September's list. Then, it'll be business as usual! Hopefully this doesn't cause confusion (and yes, the way my brain has been malfunctioning lately I'd be confused so don't feel bad.)

Wheeza, I'm honestly too into Nora's usual books that her Robb books don't really interest me too much. And if memory serves me right (no comments from the peanut gallery ladies) she writes the J. D. Robb books with her husband.

osagegypsy I'll get you listed as soon as I send this thing off. You needn't feel like you have to go back and read all we've read so far in this group. We all kind of do our own thing and participate when we can or feel like it.

I love Betty White - she is such a hoot! What a feisty lady she is. And it doesn't hurt that she is such an advocate for animal's rights and their well being. Gotta love that!

I'll close by saying that I hope everyone is enjoying summer and getting a good dose of fresh air. Our garden is iffy but what has come up is looking good.

Hi! Could you add me to the list too? I've got my nose stuck in Nevada Barr's mystery series right now about Anna Pigeon, a Texas Forest Service Ranger. Love the series and love her - she's such a fiesty, strong woman!

August's winner is 'The Gargoyle' by Andrew Davidson! Although this may not be to everyone's tastes......it might lend itself well for a summer read just for the sake of reading.

September's book list is: http://www.goodreads.com/list/show/386.Best_books_of_September_2008

Jennifer, welcome to our little corner! I used to be a huge mystery reader but Barr was an author I've never read. But I like the idea that the story revolves around a forest ranger - I'll have to check it out.

Welcome!

Oy, the lazy days of summer!!!!!!!!

Betty White's latest book was an easy read, read in one sitting. I enjoyed it, she is a hoot! I bought The Gargoyle on Amazon for $4.00, haven't started yet.

Ladies, I sincerely apologize. It's been a very rough past few weeks. Both my parents were having their own health issues which resulted in a hospital stay for my Dad, followed by home physical and occupational therapy, doctor visits, etc. which I helped with as much as I could when I wasn't working. He's now home but Mom is still trying to recoup from her own health issues which makes it that much harder as she is my Dad's primary caregiver. I don't know how she does it!

I also had someone rear end me last week as I was coming home from the dentist (trip #3 for my tooth extraction complications) so I am still dealing with the fallout of that with both my old bod as well as my poor van. First accident for me as well as for the young 20 year old girl that hit me. We're both okay so I am grateful.

So - can I just say that hubby and I are going on a MUCH needed vacation starting next week? We're still not sure of what to do or where to go other than we want to be close to home for obvious reasons just in case.

On that note, our 'winner' for September is Home by Marilynne Robinson.

October's link is here: http://maryjanesfarm.org/snitz/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=47315&whichpage=16

And speaking of book lists. If anyone knows of or can suggest a running book list that I can use for our group, please feel free to email me. As I'm sure you've noticed - it seems that more and more lists have titles that are part of a series and not conducive to a book club read.

I'm smelling fall in the air and my fall decorations beckon me from the barn!!!!!

Brenda, you read correctly for September's book. I just finished reading a book my son left here last visit and just couldn't put it down. I haven't read in awhile and I can't tell you how much I enjoyed just sitting and doing nothing but have my nose in a book!

I think you're already in our group so you're all set. (List is on page 5 of this thread and you can check it out if you'd like) I checked out your blog and I love the porch pictures, it looks so dang peaceful.

I'd also like to check out Home but I'm half afraid to see what my fines are at the library. :( I've been terrible about getting my books back on time this summer...... I'll admit to having a $56 fine in San Diego many years ago. Can anyone top that one? LOL On the plus side, the library is a place I have no qualms of 'donating' my money too!

$12.70 big ones is what I owe our library. Am going to have to pay if before my hubby finds out! Tee hee It's a running joke about my fines, but then my laziness costs us $$ so it's not really THAT funny. Anyhoot, I just requested a copy of Home and should get it in the next few days........

An old laptop and a temperamental browser (Firefox) do not make a happy internet experience. Hence, a large reason why I've not been on to update.

Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins is our winner for October! I have not read anything by this author but as Valerie pointed out - I've also heard positive reviews of this author. Plus side it is the first of a series, too.

November's link is as follows: http://www.goodreads.com/list/show/389.Best_books_of_November_2008

Thanks for the fall wishes, Marianne! Hope you're enjoying as much as I am. Today was absolutely beautiful so I've been outside a large part of the day doing odds and ends like hanging out clothes, picking more tomatoes and peppers for canning (hopefully - it's going to be my first try), and sitting on the swing with hubby enjoying the sunshine while it's warm enough to sit outside before the snow (gasp!) flies.

Geesh, and speaking of snow. It's going to be Christmas before we know it. I've got to get cracking on my crocheting for gifts. Maybe a sweater for hubby, a shrug for my daughter, and shawl or lap blanket for my Mom. I am becoming a yarn hoarder for sure. I can't come home without a skein of the stuff if it catches my eye - just to try something new. :)

hey! I had time to read The Help. It was wonderful, many heartwarming passages, very thought provoking and enough humor to keep such a heavy issue from becoming overwhelming. I wholeheartedly recommend it. I think you will love the characters as much as I did. Has anyone else read it?

My sincere apologies ladies for being absent so long! In short, I broke my right arm (I'm right handed) early last month resulting in surgery to have a plate put in. Recovery has been sloooow and frustrating. But I am thankful that it wasn't any worse than it was.

Fast forward to today: I've been in the festive mood (ok, I'll admit to having Christmas music on since Halloween) and had my simmering pot of evergreen smelling the house up like pine boughs along with the holiday tunes playing in the background. In between doing some much needed cleaning I've been reading Snow Bride by Debbie Macomber and recently finished another of her holiday books called Christmas Wishes (at least I think that's what it's called.)

So.......if anyone is still interested, I'm going to try and catch up in short order and offer December's selection and will post the winner on the first. And I hope you all agree that December just wouldn't feel like December unless we had a good holiday related book to celebrate this festive and joyous month! Below is a link of a book list of just that......Christmas books!

www.goodreads.com/search?q=christmas&group_id=&search_type=books&search%5Bsource%5D=goodreads&search%5Bfield%5D=on

Because the first several are classics (nothing against classics here - who doesn't like Dickens?) so please choose from the first 10 listed rather than the first 5.

On that note - I wish for everyone a wonderful Thanksgiving next week and please be careful if you're brave enough to venture out for Black Friday.

Karen

Karen there was some good books listed, but I'd have to say "The Christmas Jars, by Jason Wright" sounds interesting. But I'll be happy with any book that wins the vote. Thanks for doing this. And I do pray that your arm is doing much better. Hugs,Brenda

I so hope that I haven't lost peoples interest due to my long absence. :(
