No fairie poem threads yet, but great idea. I love fairies and fairie poems! Here are three little fairy ditties that I wrote to start out:

Remember, I write for little children, all of my stories and poems are G rated!! :) Please share these with all of your little ones. I hope you and they like them!

SLEEPY MOON FARM

Sleepy Moon Farm is in Lullaby Land.
Two stars past the golden sun.
Come sail over mountains of drowsy sand,
Where sleep is the way to have fun.

Wonders abound and await you there
There are kittens and ponies and ice cream.
Rainbows and star dust will kiss your hair.
And the faeries will give you a nice dream.

********************************************************************

Fairy Babies Bedtime

Thistledown beds and rose petal pillows.
Mossy blankets under weeping willows.
Moonbeam night-lights
Dewdrop kisses
These are a fairy baby’s bedtime wishes.

*********************************************************************

Two Great Aunties

You have two aunties who live in town,
Janie Berry and Jennifer Brown.
They dance all night on thistledown,
And send sweet dreams,
on faerie’s wings,
To kiss away your sleepy frown.

*********************************************************************

Enjoy!

from Fairies and Chimneys by Rose Fyleman (1952 edition)

Fairies and Chimneys

There are fairies at the bottom of our garden!
It's not so very, very far away;
You pass the gardener's shed and you just keep
straight ahead ...
I do so hope they've really come to stay.
There's a little wood, with moss in it and beetles,
And a little stream that quietyly runs through;
You wouldn't think they'd dare to come merry-
making there ...
Well, they do!

There are fairies at the bottom of our garden!
They often have a dance on summer nights;
The butterflies and bees make a lovely little breeze,
And the rabbits stand about and hold the lights.

Did you know that they could sit upon the moon-beams
And pick a little star to make a fan,
And dance away up there in the middle of the air?
Well, they can!

There are fairies at the bottom of our garden!
You cannot think how beautiful they are;
They all stand up and sing when the Fairy Queen and King
Come gently floating down upon their car.
The King is very proud and VERY handsome;
The Queen .. now can you guess who that could be
(She's a ilttle girl all day, but a night she steals away)?
well .. it's ME!

Rose Fyleman

A fairy went a-marketing ..
She bought a little fish;
She put it in a crystal bowl
Upon a golden dish.
An hour she sat in wonderment
And watched its silver gleam,
And then she gently took it up
And slipped it in a stream.

A fairy went a -marketing ..
She bought a coloured bird;
It sang the sweetest, shrillest song
That ever she had heard.
She sat beside its painted cage
And listened half the day,
And then she opened wide the door
And let itt fly away.

A fairy went a-marketing ..
She bought a winter gown
All stitched about with gossamer
And ined with thisledown.
She wore it all the aternoon
With prancing and delight,
Then gave it to a little frog
To keep him warm at night.

A fairy went a-marketing ..
She bought a gentle mouse
To take her tiny messages,
To kepher tiny house.
All day she kitp its busy feet
Pit-patting to and fro.
And then she kissed its silken ears,
Thankd it, and let it go.

Rose Fyleman:

The best game the fairies play,
The best game of all,
Is sliding down steeples ..
(you know they're very tall).
You fly to the weathcock,
And when you hear it crow
You fold your wings and cluthc your things
And then let go!

They have a million other games ..
Cloud-catching's one,
And mud-mixing after rain
Is heaps and heaps of fun;
But when you go and stay with them
Never miind the rest,
Take my advice .. they're very nice,
But steeple-sliding's best!

i think her books are out of print .. but they are precious .. you might want to look 'on-line' for them from time to time. i have several ... also .. one by RACHEL FIELD (who wrote my favorite children's book: Hitty .. Her First 100 Years) has written one called "The Pointed People" .. mine is 1940 copy and it is most likely out of print too. i'll go get it and copy a few of her poems for ya'! xo

not all the poems in Rachel Field's books are about 'fairies' .. but they are dear .. here's one:

REBLLION IN SPETEMBER

Fiv and twelve make? Oh, dear me,
How the red leaves shine on the maple tree.

Wild geese fly in a long dark line!
Seven times seven are forty-nine.

Crickets chirp where the grass grows brown ..
Which is the verb and which the noun?

Asters grow white and gentians blue ..
What are the boundaries of Peru?

How can I name the Presidents,
When corn stalks rise like golden tents?

Eleven times three are thirty-three ..
Why wasn't I born a bird or a tree?

Rachel Field:

ALMOST

There are things you almost see
In the woods of evening ..
Fairies as thick as fireflies,
Elves leaping in a ring.

There are things you almost hear
When no one passes by ...
Stirring of seeds in good damp earth,
Stars marching through the sky.

Rachel Field:

ELVES, GO FETCH YOUR LANTERNS

Elves, go fetch your lanterns:
Light up every pine cone
Where the woods are thickest,
Les, when darkness falls
Black as any witch-cloak,
Baby birds should wake and cry
Fearful in the dark.

THE POINTED PEOPLE

I don't know who they are,
But when it's shadow time
In woods where the trees crowd close,
With bristly branches crossed,
Fronm their secret hiding places
I have seen the Pointed People
Gliding through brush and bracken.
Maybe a peaked cap
Pricking out through the leaves,
Or a tiny pointed ear
Up-ocked, all brown and furry,
From ferns and berry brambles,
Or a pointed hoof's sharp print
Deep in the tufted moss,
And once a pointed face
That peered between the cedars,
Blinking right eyes at me
And shaking with silent laughter.

FAIRY BUTTONS

Underneath the moss
And the brown pine needles
Yellow mushrooms hide,
Tiny and round and bright ..
Little gold buttons the elves
Wear on their short green jackets.

If I told the grown-up people
Where those mushrooms grow,
They would surely pick and eat them,
And when the elves came
There'd not be buttons enough
For all the jackets!

i like Rose Fyleman's fairie poems more than Rachel Field's Pointed People stories.

The kindly rooster is the fairies' friend,
He warns them when their revels must end:
He never forgets to give the word,
For the rooster is a thoro9ughly punctual bird.

And since he grieves that he never can fly,
Like all the other birds, up in the sky,
The fairies put him now and again
High on a church for a weather-vane.

Little for sun or for rain he cares;
He turns about with the proudest airs
And chuckles with joy as the clouds go past
To think he is up in the sky at last.

tHEY JUMPED ABOUT FROM BAR TO BAR,
aND THEN THEY FLUTTERED TO THE WALLS
wHERE COLOURED BIRDS AND FLOWERS ARE.

i WATCHED THEM DARTING IN AND OUT,

your welcome but aunt george and CabinCreek-Kentucky did all the work I just wondered if no one was reading it any more. It is lovely and things get lost and all the new people don't know what has already happened on the site. It would be nice if every now and again a person just sat down and read one forums posts past and present to see what goes on. I am glad I was able to show this to you buttercup.

Yes thanks Sunshine, I loved all the poems too. Have you all read The Flower Fairies - they are English. I know one of my girls has the book somewhere - I'll have a look. I also have The Australian Flower Fairies which is cute, too. Now I'll have to look through all my poetry books for some more!!
Best wishes,
Jayne

Here's a fairy poem from Fairy Fantasies by Marguerite Graham (1940):

Fairy Weavers

Do you know the fairy weavers
Who reside in Fairy-Town?
They are banded all together
In a group of great renown.

They weave upon their tiny looms
A special kind of cloth
Which is not at all affected
By the silk-worm or the moth.

For the warp is made of fancies;
The woof is made of dreams;
It's shot through with rays of sunshine
And silv'ry-white moonbeams.

Now the colors are entrancing;
There are greens, and blues and reds
Which are blended altogether
By the daintiest of threads.

But sometimes these little weavers
Drop their threads upon the floor
And before they are discovered
They are whisked out through the door.

If you're lucky, and can catch them
As I did the other day,
And shut them fast within a book,
Before they're blown away,

The strangest thing will happen,
At least it does sometimes,
When next you look within that book
You'll find they've turned to rhymes.

Re-reading these poems - and reading the one above for the first time - is just magical! Thanks for bumping them up for the wonderous autumn season!
