I've been battling a severe head cold since the Monday before Thanksigiving, with the long weekend of Thanksgiving being the worst. I thought I was out of the woods this past Sunday, but I'll be darn if I now seem to have developed a sinus infection. The congestion in my head (and only in my head/nose) is so extreme that it hurts when I blow my nose. My head actually ACHES when I cough. I've taken 10 kinds of over the counter meds but nothing seems to be helping.
Any suggestions? I'm back to where I was on Thanksgiving where I can't even taste food. And I'm just OVER it!

Have you tried a neti pot and/or saline to rinse your sinuses? or does that just make it worse? I use a fairly natural sinus and nose rinse solution called Alkalol, which has helped me a lot. Trying to think of ways to help with out going to the doctor and ending up on antibiotics =(
I hope that something works to take down the pressure. *hugs*

Hey Jonni, if you have had it that long..hate to tell you, but you probably need an antibiotic. I hate to take them, but in the past, when I have had a BAD lingering head cold, after only a few doses, it clears up presto. Lucky for me, that has been several years, but it sounds like you have a true sinus infection. You need to get that taken care of before Christmas!

That's what I was thinking, Lisa. It's REALLy frustrating...I did just try to call my doc, but they're out to lunch. Guess I'll go, too and when I come back, see what if I can get in. So frustrating!

I use Sinus Rescue nose spray from Peaceful Mountain. It has helped with my sinus headaches, too.

Jonni- also try using ice packs to reduce the inflamation in your sinuses. Sometimes they get aggravated so they swell which blocks drainage which in turn continues to aggravate. When I get sinus infections I take steamy baths and then lay a bag of crushed ice on my face so the mucas can get runny but the swelling can go down. It seems to help.

I'm going to second the nasal rinse suggestion. I also have luck with putting some euchaliptus (know I spelled that wrong) EO in an oil burner with a drop or so of olive oil. I also sometimes mix euchaliptus EO and olive oil together and massage into my sinus area and then put very warm rice/flax seed packs on. There are also accupressure points you can push on to try and drain the sinuses - my massage therapist showed me how to do this.

Thanks for all the suggestions, girls. I broke down and made a Dr's appt. for the morning, but I will go home immediately and do the nasal rinse. I can't BELIEVE how much it hurts in my eusatcean tubes, cheek bones, and the bones at the base of my skull when I blow my nose. OUCH. And I simply can't think.

The one thing I can count on for almost instant relief (and I;ve had chronic sinus infections for over thirty years, and five nasal surgeries) is to steam my head. Boil some water in a saucepan, set it on the kitchen table, drape your head with a towel, and let the heat soothe those wretched sinuses. You can put some fresh ginger in there too, that really helps. The homeopathic remedy that works the best for my family and me is Kali bichromicum, it is great for sinus problems and coughs. Good luck! I know how wretched the sinus stuff is, and it can get to be relentless. Hope you and your family have a lovely holiday, I'm looking forward to seeing Violet under (or near) the tree. Cheers, Karin
