What does it mean to do a yarn forward or backward? Is that the same as a yarn over? The pattern I using says wyif (I guess that means yarn forward) Can't figure this out. Need help.

wyif "with yarn in front"

bring your yarn to the front of the work, between the stitch you just worked and the next stitch, as if you were going to start purling. It is NOT a yarn over, which is a way to make another stitch.
