I would like to make and/or buy a baby sling, but I cannot for the life of me find the article in MJ's magazine that recommended a seller. I know it is from a while ago, but any help would be appreciated!

I don't remember the article but there is a maker of baby slings in Moscow, Idaho who has an etsy shop. It might be the one you were talking about

Thank you Star, I believe that was the maker, but she doesn't have any for sale :( Anyone in MJ world that sells slings or has a pattern, Please let me know.

I have tons of sewing piled up and frankly don't want to sew anything that is "tried and true" by other farmgirls, so a pattern will be appreciated but a sling to buy is what I want.

Thank you!

Try this one.
My best friend's daughter-in-law has been with them for years, and the whole family used the slings. She &best friend's grandaughter are in the photos, and looking lovely, if I may brag! We used Snugli in the '70s & '80s and these are so much nicer!

I've heard great things about beco!

I bet if you went to a LLL meeting you would even find some local slings in your area. Both the LLL meetings I go to in my area, have a lot of baby wearing moms. In fact they even formed a baby wearing group that meets on different days when LLL doesn't meet. They have a ton of different slings and carriers, and even have a few for loan (like a library, it's free) for moms to see what they would like. I think a local baby wearing group would be a good place to start cause even if they don't have any for loan, I know here the baby wearing mom's are always happy to at least let you try theirs on and see how you like it, and help you learn how to wear baby. If it's hard for you to find a local baby wearing group, like I said, I bet if you went to a LLL meeting or two some one there would know where to find one. Or I bet a lot of those mom's (just like the ones in my group) also wear and would even allow you to test theirs out and tell you were you can find them as well.

I am a little (okay, a lot) late on this, but I love babywearing and have several options that I have tried and use. I have a mayan ring sling, a babyhawk, two hotslings, and a moby wrap. If you want opinions on what each one is good for and which are my favorites overall, drop me a line or reply hare :) I also nursed, so I have experience nursing in a sling too.

The only thing with moby is some people have really big babies, or their babies get big fast, and then I have heard that it's harder to carry a larger baby in a moby. You have to readjust often. I love my moby though, but my kids don't get very big. My oldest is 4 y/o and is only 25 lbs. My baby is 13 months and 13 lbs. So we don't have the weight problem other mommies may have. That being said, I still like my mei tie the best! lol And for east of use the pocket kangaroo korner one is awesome!

This is the method I use and have used on my 8 month old since she was born.
All you need is like 6-ish yards of jersey knit fabric.
I'm a very tall and busty mama, so I've never seen a store made carrier or sling that fit me well, so I completely customized this and added an extra yard or two to give me plenty of material to work with. All together, this sling will cost you FAR less than 20 bucks, and is extremely comfortable no matter your size or your baby's. In fact it effortlessly grows with your baby with no difference in putting the thing on.

If this isn't quite what you had in mind, there's a lot of other instruction videos for tying different sling styles on youtube.

Jen a Mei Tie would probably fit you, and kangaroo corner used to make different sizes (much different sizes then store carries!). I'm a I cup and weigh around 200 lbs (and I'm 4'8!) I let my sil who is about 5'7 and around 250 lbs use one of my slings and she could wear it too, however she is much smaller chested then me. But, the mei tie ties on so it adjust to you how you tie it, I paid the extra money to have "long" ties for being over weight (they didn't say that on the website but that's what it meant! lol) but I found I shouldn't of paid cause they are waaaaaaaaaaaay too long for me! lol haha

The jersey is good and I like it for smaller babies, but once the child is around 20 lbs or more it seems you have to adjust it constantly. The mei tie with snaps, or the kangaroo pouch doesn't do that as much.

For my next baby I'm going with a Sleepy Wrap, and of course I have a newer snugli, but I noticed with my son (a lot bigger baby than my daughter) I couldn't use the snugli because it dug into my shoulders and since I have problem's with migraines I got headaches when I used it with him. I guess it really depends, maybe you can find a friend and try on a few different wraps to see what works for you? Some people I know swear by an actual sling but I couldn't stand them. Good luck,I hope you can find a wrap/sling that works for you and baby!

I've never heard any one like a snugli even though some peoples looks like a snugli the mie tie is much different! As for the sleepy wrap it's the same as a moby, and again will work till about 20 lbs then it gets harder to use. if you like the way the moby/sleepy wrap ties and want to stay with that kind, it's best to get less stretchy fabric after 20 lbs. And then you don't have to readjust so much.

It's crazy but the moby brand hurt the tops of my shoulders but the sleepy wrap didn't. The mai tie looks good too (I think it looks better than the snugli). For next summer I am going to try out using Batik cloth to try to reduce some heat in the summer plus with my baby going to be older next summer it doesn't have as much give as the sleepy wrap.

Do any of you ladies use a type of baby carrier that you can use on your back too? Could you use any type of fabric or is there a better/certain type of fabric for a back carrier? Just wondering for when my baby gets too heavy for me to comfortably carry him/her (haven't found out the gender yet!) on my front I would like to still carry on my back like I see other women across the world doing. My question is what kind of fabric do they use? How do they make it look so easy? Is it easy to carry on the back? Anyone got tips? Thanks :) Oh, I didn't want to start a new thread since its still a baby carrier. :)

It's pretty easy to carry on the back. They do need to be a certain age though (or at least that's what is reccomended in the USA) for back carrying. I think they just need to be old enough to hold up their own head and such. Wovens in my opinion are better for back carrying. You can do a maya wrap (which is a moby made from a woven instead of a knit) or you can also do the mie tie. mie tie (sp) has a smaller learning curve, but neither is that hard to learn. Also there is mie ties with snaps (the oh snap is by baby hawk), but also ergo and becco and a few others are basically the same thing.

I carry mine facing outward in the moby. I like it better than having her on my back.

Just wondering if anyone used the Maya sling for nursing? My midwife doesn't recommend using a moby/sleepywrap until the baby is older even to use for nursing. She recommends slings but where to start? I want to make nursing work for me this time around so what kind of baby wearing works best for nursing and on the go when baby is teeny tiny? Thanks!

Actually moby is for the smaller, bigger babies don't do well in moby's because of it being so stretchy. I know a lot of mom's nurse in mobys.

Every one is different. Many people like a ring sling, I never could get the hang of a ring sling though, but a lot of people love them. I personally liked the pouches. (like kangaroo korner pouches).

What is best is if you can go to a store that specializes in slings that will let you use them and see how you feel in them. Or contact a local sling group and they sometimes have a library of slings to check out and borrow and see what works best for you.

Just by coincidence tonight I bought a ring sling at a swap meet our La Leche League had. I have another ring sling, but it was a gift from a friend it has padded rails, I am only 4 feet 8 inches tall, all that padding takes my body over and I feel like I am a big sling! I seen this beautiful ring sling tonight though at the swap, and couldn't take my eyes off it. So......finally I asked the woman who brought it if she could help me put it on so I was making sure I was wearing it correctly, it was NOT padded, and was just perfect size for me, I am in love with it. And all this time because of my big ole bulky padded railing one I thought I didn't like them! I bought it for 5 dollars, and now I think I will make myself a few more based on this ones dimensions! lol

Again, I just can't stress enough to find your local LLL meeting, and go! You never know what you will learn about slings there and you can at least try some of them on for free, and may be able to get one for free or at the very least very cheap (I mean 5 dollars!) and get to know what YOU like and are comfortable with, with out throwing your money out the window.

Wow, that is a great deal! I have to get down to an LLL meeting, it's too bad the closest one is an hour away but I still want to go! Sounds like they will have some great advice about this too! Thanks :)

I travel a hour to mine too. I have one closer but it's on the same night as I have church. So I travel the hour to the other one. And even though the people in the closer one to me are nice, I must say I mesh better with the people from the one a hour away. I never really felt included in the closer one any way. I've only been going to the one a hour away now for a few months, it was my idea to have the swap meet to raise money for our group and they jumped on it and already did it! I really feel part of this one much more.

Any way that being said, it's been worth it to me to go the hour away, it's only supposed to be once a month any way, but this one that is a hour away from me has two a month. But, again it's been worth it. My husband isn't too keen on the gas it takes, but I've limited my other outings to make up for it. Cause really I like going and it's worth it to me. I truly wish I meshed better with the closer one, and that it was on a night I could go, and that they had two a month instead of one. But, that's not the reality. ARG! lol But, oh well. Like I said, it's been worth the sacrifice for me.

Oh and guess what they had a back carrier one too! But, the lady said it was so thick it was really hot and could only be used in the winter! I almost bought it but I am so naturally hot I didn't know. I now wish I would of bought it though! UHG! lol I never seen one like it though.

But, I know that the moby, maya, and mei tie can all be worn on the back. I use a pouch on the hip, and will I guess start using this new ring sling on my hip as well.
