Oh, I don't sleep well since Menomania hit a while back, so I sew until I'm tired and get up around 5am everyday, and usually sew. I really have an obsession to do something all of the time. My enemy is laundry though....argh.....I need to carry a sign: Will sew aprons in exchange for laundry chores! LOL Thank you for reading my stories. I love to write, but my muse has been napping for awhile. Being here at MaryJanes has really revived my muse and I feel like writing again. Thank you again! My daughters are my little angels....and devils...LOL....I love them dearly, they keep me going and are endless inspiration.

Georgann, I have tons of material too and I've found alot of it recently that I think would look good as an apron. My 12yr old son asked me what I was making the other day and I told him an apron and he asked me what for. It's hard to explain to a child that an apron isn't just something to keep our shirt or whatever from getting dirty, it's the longing for the simpler times. I remember my Mom wearing an apron as she went about her daily routine, sure wish I had at least one of her aprons. I do have a sewing machine she gave me that she bought probably about 1970, maybe earlier, and I love seeing her handwritten comments in the manual. She's 80 now and her hands have been so shaky for so long that I rarely see her handwriting. I do have a birthday card that she gave me a couple years ago that she wrote in "I love you, Mama".
I always wanted a log home too and never, ever dreamed I'd get one but when we lived in Seattle 4yrs ago and were looking to move to the Olympic Peninsula I found the ad for this on realestate.com but thought it was a come-on, still we came to look at it and loved it before we even got to the house. We had a surprise snowfall in Western Washington, mid-March, and with this house being at about 900ft up there was even more here, a foot of snow! The weird thing was that this place was for sale for a year before we found it! I feel very strongly that I was meant to live here. It's not real big, an elderly couple had lived here for 20yrs. It has an apt size dishwasher, a tiny "dining room", etc but it has 2 covered porches and is on 10 acres. Anyway, guess this is off the subject of aprons! I just love them and can't wait to make more! I have some cute Christmas material that I'd love to make an apron out of, maybe some for gifts too. It has gingerbread men, etc on it and would be great to wear when I'm making Christmas cookies! Cheryl |

Oh Cheryl, Thank you for the lovely picture you painted for me with your words about your cabin in the mountains. I know that the image of you in your gingerbread apron, baking cookies in your snowy log cabin will stay with me. Promise you will take some photos and post them when you get that first snow and you are baking those yummy cookies! Say, I would love to send you some red rick rack to go on a Christmas apron. It is part of my vintage cotton stash. I have plenty to share with you. Email me.
Here is my favorite cookie recipe. My Mom, HeidiFritz used to make these. They rarely make it into the Christmas cookie trays here, because they are always eaten first.
Snowball Cookies 1 cup butter or margarine, softened (my grandma called it oleomargarine) 1/2 cup confectioners sugar 1 teaspoon vanilla 2 1/4 cups all purpose flour 1/4 teaspoon salt 3/4 finely chopped nuts (I always use pecans for a southern flavor)
Heat oven to 400 degrees. Mix together butter, sugar and vanilla. In another bowl, whisk together flour salt and nuts. Work into butter/sugar mixture until it holds together. Shape dough into 1 inch balls. Place on ungreased cookie sheet. Bake for 10 to 12 minutes until set but not brown. Remove from oven. While still warm roll in confectioners sugar. Cool then roll in sugar again. These freeze well so can be made in advance of the holidays and hidden deep in the freezer away from little, or big, hands! I've done many variations on this, like add lemon flavoring, or dusting with a mixture of granulated lemon flavor crystals and powdered sugar. They are pretty presented in mini muffin papers in a box. I know this is a purely decadent recipe, but for the holidays sometimes it calls for this. A flavor and memory from my childhood.
Just thought a snowball cookie recipe would go well with your snowy cabin! (These cookies go by many names: Mexican Wedding Caks, Russian Tea Cookies, etc.)
Enjoy, Georgann |

Georgann, I love your aprons. Your blog reminds me of another one I like called A Dress a Day, only you have aprons instead of dresses.

OK Laura, I DID IT AGAIN!! This is about sewing not animals, so maybe Laura, you could make some little pillows out of vintage material for the hens to sit on. there, sewing, we are back on track. NANCY JO |

gurlz .. do we have a thread where we write apron sayings, songs, thoughts, stories .. orare they interwoven in this heading?
i think i'll wander back to page one of this thread and work my way through looking for some. .. or shall we start a new one just for 'APRON STRINGS' (sayings, thoughts, etc.)?

Hi Frannie, why not have it here? But a new thread is okay too!
Laura, I took a look at that dress a day site...I LOVE it!! I take that as a high complement! Thanks for reading my blog and visiting with me there!!
Sunshine.....I just blogged!! I was up all night with a sick little girl, so I'm a little behind today, but I did finish an apron today, oh, and you can get a peak at three new little works in progress...I have the fabrics lined up on my wicker sofa...blue, pink and yellow. I couldn't resist throwing in some green with the pink. I've been looking for an opportunity to use that pretty striped green with the old fashioned girls on it.
Nancy Jo...be watching the mail, and remember, my sewing is not perfect by any means at all. I hope it fits If it doesn't, just cut the whole top off and use that part as a wash rag and go with a half apron! LOL
Oh, I posted a little look into my sewing room too on the blog today!
Love and wishes, Aunt George |

Georgann, I just wrote you on your blog this nice long thing and then it wouldn't post. So I will tell you here that I love that apron, and to find out that you are sending it to me, well now I can hardly stand myself I'am so excited. But I will be fine, not to worry. Tear it up for a dish rag, I think NOT!! Loved the sewing room pictures, now I can picture you when you are sewing. I too like the fresh air, curtains blowing in the breeze. We have an air conditioner in the bedroom, use it only when it is very hot. Hope your little one is feeling better, I had awful earaches when I was little, they are no fun. Thankyou again Georgann, what a very very nice gift. HUGS NANCY JO

Oh, no that's ok. My blog wasn't posted until this afternoon. You aren't pushy at all!! I enjoy doing it. So don't worry about it at all. I love to write. I'll be doing another update this evening if I can stay awake.
Found some great apron websites I want to post URL's to.

Georgann, I wondered what you were doing up at 4am this morning. I have gotten into a terriible habit of getting up at about 3-3:30 and turning the computer on and fooling around on it until almost 5am. Since I'm out on disability and I live alone, I can go back to bed until 8 but still. One of your messages was one of the last ones I read this morning before turning off the computer and going back to sleep. I kind of wished that there was a true "chat room" here because I would have said hi. I hope your little one is feeling much better and that if I'm up in the middle of the night again tonight you are getting some restful sleep.

aunt george glad you liked the lace and the Carson Piere Scott box. I have no idea who or what Carson Piere Scott is. I received the box when I bought some weave it looms on ebay and they came in that box I thought the box was cute so I kept it. Then when I had to send your lace to you and was looking for a box I saw it and thought that cute and will work. So glad it was fun to you to get and that you knew who the company was or is .

Thanks Sunshine....I'll do that. I am also sending you a sample of the crocheted lace that I used today. I found an old card table, table cloth and redid it into an apron....it is on my blog!! I have a section to send to you incase you want to get a pattern off of it. It looks like hand crocheted rick rack...the blue part of the lace edging. If you go to my blog click on the apron picture and it goes real close up so you can have a good look at the lace.
I really hope ya'll like this apron. I think it turned out very pretty. I now am going to look for more linen bargains like that to repurpose into aprons. I have enough lace left from the edging to do another apron! I also have two of the embroidered panels from the tablecloth! Anyone have an idea for a name for this apron? |

Georgann, That apron is adorable! I'm amazed at you being able to take something and envision it as an apron and then making it and having it done by that night! You've got me wanting to check out the second hand stores, and garage sales too. Cheryl |

Dear Farmgirl friends, My brain is feeling befuddled at the moment. I have mailed many packages this week, but I'm so afraid that I missed someone's rick rack. If I am sending your rick rack, PLEASE email me....I have an extra board of rick rack ready to go, but for the life of me, can't remember to whom!! YIKES.......I swear if my head weren't screwed on I'd lose it!!
Thanks dear friends! Georgann |

You had said you'd send me some red rick rack but I haven't emailed you with my address yet. By the way, I loved your wind poem on your blog! I've been trying to get as much sewing done as I could this week. I found some material to use to complete the apron where the main material has the roosters and pumpkins, etc. The material I'm using is dark green with chicken wire on it, sounds weird but it looks good. I wish my husband hadn't taken the camera. He said last night that President Bush is coming here to Medina and he had thought it would be like last night so since he works at Boeing Field where the plane will land he wanted to try and get a picture. Well, I'd better go feed and water all the chickens. I wore my apron till I went to bed last night! Cheryl |

Cheryl, Believe it or not, I've been eyeing that chicken wire fabric at Hancock Fabrics. There's is a blue rather than green. I love it. I want to make an apron with that as the background and then applique a chicken pocket onto it. You are right it is really cute fabric! Did your DH see George?
Sunshine, I'm glad the rick rack got there. I will keep my eyes peeled for more for you, and I will be sending you more of my stash in the next box.

Georgeann (and everyone else)- check out this apron I found on ebay- http://i10.ebayimg.com/03/i/07/38/9e/f1_1.JPG It's a half-apron with a cloth calendar making up the front pocket. Pretty cool idea if you come across those calendars (like I did at the Salvation Army a couple of weeks ago).

That is really cute! Great idea. I've seen those tea towels go for pretty cheep! I had thought of making aprons out of them but never a huge pocket...now that I really like!! Next time you are at the SA, be sure to dig through the bins and pluck out those kind of treasures!! Georgann |

Georgann, that is such a cool idea about using the chicken wire fabric as a background and then applique a chicken pocket on it! I have 2 colors of the chicken wire fabric, the one that's kind of a darkish green and another that's kind of a country red. I would love to find it in cream! I found 2 fabrics for the MaryJane apron yesterday, got one that's sort of like the apron pictured but smaller print and then when I couldn't use my 50% off coupon since she said it was already 50% off I went and found another fabric too that has more yellow in it. I washed them last night, will post pictures this weekend hopefully. When my husband is home I'm lucky to even be able to email at all (he's busy watching tv). He said George's plane was already gone when he got to work yesterday afternoon. He gets off work at 11pm and then drives home Friday night, 3hr drive, so he got here around 2am. Didn't get to sleep till 3:30am! I'm a zombie today. Better go make some food. Cheryl |
