Hi Kim, Welcome to Mary Janes Farm Forums! So glad you are here! Thanks for posting on my blog. Glad you are enjoying it! To answer your question on the trim. I do use bias tape, but I find it is not always very easy to work with. I am going to make my own bias trim for the 5201. I have done it in the past and it is beautiful and easier to work with than the prepackaged bias tapes, but with my hand still not working quite right, I'm trying to avoid tiny hand work. I actually like to serge the edges than fold them under and stitch them down then cover the seams with some kind of trim like rick rack or then apply bias tape. Would you like some vintage rick rack for your aprons? Email me and I'll arrange to send you some for your aprons. You probably saw I hit the motherload of vintage cotton rick rack! Looking forward to seeing your aprons too! I LOVE the dollar and 2 dollar fabric table at Wal-Mart!! That is where I get alot of my fabrics.
Again, Welcome!!! I'm finishing up a bright blue with white rick rack apron this evening after I get the kids to bed.

Okay, I have a sewing dummy question. What purpose does the bias tape serve? |

bias tape or bias trim comes in single fold or double fold. It is used over raw edges of seams or the outside edges of a garment to finish it off and give it a decorative finish. It is often in a contrasting/coordinating color. To make it, the fabric being used for trim is laid out on the diagonal to the selvedge edges of the fabric. Not with the grain of the fabric. This way it will stretch or shape nicely without creasing around curves.
Here are a couple of nice explainations:
http://www.denverfabrics.com/pages/sewinginfo/simplicity-sewing-hints/sewing-bias.htm http://sewing.about.com/library/weekly/aa041005.htm
Hope this helps a little, and it is not a dummy question. |

I too need to know how to use bias tape. I made my first apron today and all I have left is that I'm supposed to put bias tape on all the raw edges. There are two side sections of the apron that have the pockets sewn on them and then I was supposed to sew the sides to the front with wrong sides together and apply bias tape to that edge and then around the arm holes, etc. I bought some single fold bias tape and went to those 2 sites and they explain what it's for good but I guess I'm a visual learner. Usually if I read how to do something I need diagrams to make me understand it. Does anybody know of something with a diagram of how to put the bias tape on? Cheryl |

You are welcome Cheryl...hope the bias tape is working out for you today.
How are the aprons coming along? Love to see them when you are done. I tried doing the one step application today on the Georgie Girl apron...which I posted on my blog a few minutes ago, along with some other photos...and I think I really prefer the two step process. It doesn't take the inner curves as nicely doing it with one step application.
Keep in mind there is one more day...Sunday...left on the $1.99 Simplicity patterns at Hancock Fabrics if there is one near you! Here is a link to their flyer:
http://www.hancockfabrics.com/mailers/06042006/index.jsp?version=1&page=1
If the link doesn't work, just go to hancockfabrics.com and click on the sales flyer tab at the top of the page!

I started pinning the bias tape on the apron and it became apparent that I didn't have enough tape so we went into town to JoAnne's Fabric and I got some more. I can't wait to start sewing it but when my husband is here on the weekends I don't get much chance to sew. Usually he watches alot of tv since he can't watch it during the week so I thought I could sew then but he has hardly watched any tv today. It is our anniversary (17yrs) so I guess I should be paying attention to him and not sewing...lol! We didn't do much, went into town and got a burger and sat at the viewpoint park looking over the harbor of Port Angeles. We don't go out to dinner much, pretty happy to hang out at home. Anyway, there's no Hancock Fabrics on the Olympic Peninsula that I know of but JoAnnes is having a big sale next weekend so their patterns might be on sale. I'll have to check out your blog, I think I did look at it the other day but I'll check it out again to see your new posted picture. Thanks so much for your help. Looking at that apron tutorial really did help me understand how to put the bias tape on. I'll have to figure out how to post a picture on here or start a blog, never have and really don't know how. It's 11:30pm now and I've been working on the bias tape for quite awhile and am loving how it's turning out! It's pretty time consuming but I love working on things where I can see my progress. I have a feeling I'll be up late anyway. An hour or two ago we were pretty sure we saw a bat flying around but can't find it so who could sleep after that? We've had bats in here at least 3 times since we lived here. Not long ago we found one in the kitchen sink dead on top of a plate that had been in the sink and my teenage son wanted me to throw the plate away. I love my dishes so I wouldn't throw it away so he wrote "bat plate" under the plate with permanent ink and no matter how many times I've washed that plate in the dishwasher he refuses to eat on it! Better get back to sewing! Cheryl |

That sounds exactly like something my oldest (pickiest too) son would do..how funny!! We had bats in a house in Minnesota when my sons were real small..in the chimney and in summer I opened the glass doors in front of the fireplace to clean (don't know why..it WASN'T dirty!!!!) and a bat flew in the living room. We lived 40 miles from town and I sat holding my babies in the bedroom until my husband got home from town 3 hours later. I would be braver now...I THINK. Be sure to post a picture of your apron when you get done..sounds lovely!

Aunt george Just over reading your blog. Your daughter is so cute and the dress is too. love all your aprons, and as I said before, never had an apron named after me, so I'am very honored. Those patterns you are picking are just perfect farmgirl Tasha Tudor aprons. Now about your picture, It is to fuzzy, I would not recognize you if you came to my door, unless of course you were wearing one of your aprons. I do however recognize the food wrap on the counter! Going to give my sewing area a going over in the morning. Granddaughters were all here on Saturday and I was teaching the oldest to do some sewing and embroidery, she caught on pretty quick. The little ones were doing the sewing cards. Then of course right after that ,they were all outside playing baseball, drawing with chalk all over the driveway and getting all mud. Then we had a nice dinner and I sent everyone home, took my book and went to bed. Now I'am up in the middle of the night writing this, I think I better go lay down now, its almost time to get up. Jenny, the first time there was a bat in here I called my husband at work (3hrs away from here) and his attitude was "What can I do about it?" so then I called my dad to see if he'd ever experienced this and he hadn't and didn't know what to do so finally my 28yr old son, who was staying with us for awhile, came home and him and my teenager trapped the bat in the bathroom window and when they finally could see this bat they were laughing at me because I had made it sound big and they said it was tiny as a mouse. They are creepy. I have all the lights on in the house and I can't find it anywhere. Our bedroom is the loft bedroom and it's usually where the bats end up so when I went up there a bit ago I had the sounds of 10 chicks coming up to my room and I kept thinking it was bat sounds.
Well, it's almost 2, guess I'd better go up there and try to sleep. I'll be sleeping with the covers over my head! Cheryl |

Farmgirls, I am really enjoying reading about what is happening in your homes. I love the bat story...I know it wasn't very funny when it was happening, but Cheryl, just seeing in my mind your son writing "bat plate" on the bottom of the plate and never using it again...my son would do that too! LOL...now my daughters wouldn't care, but what is it with guys? LOL
Cheryl, happy anniversary! We just celebrated 11. I'm also looking forward to seeing your apron!! I threw together a quickie tonight. Had to get an apron fix....*g*.....I refigured an old babydoll top of my girls into an apron for them. It turned out pretty cute. I've got it posted on my blog.
Nancy Jo, sorry about the photo. Really, there aren't many of me. I'll be sure to always wear an apron in the fuzzy shots so you'll know me! LOL
Tomorrow, I get to work with my muslin. Just bought a bolt of it. Had a 40% off coupon for one cut of fabric....so I took the whole bolt, so this 100% cotton muslin cost me just sixty cents per yard!
More later, Hands are a wee achey and I need a bit of sleep, Georgann |

Georgann, thank you for the happy anniversary! The bat thing ended up getting ugly last night. We looked and looked but couldn't find it so figured we were mistaken or it had gotten out but just as I was all comfy in bed and ready to drift off I saw it flying around above my bed! Luckily for me, my husband was here so I dove under the blankets while he tried to catch it. When it became apparent that it had gone downstairs I went on down there and finally after chasing it around the house we got it close enough to the front door to open the door and get it to fly out. Gave me the creeps!
Today we had to go into town and get stuff to build our chicken coop fencing and a smallish temporary chicken house so at least 3 of the black silkies can go outside tomorrow. I didn't end up getting alot of time tonight to sew on my apron but I've had nothing but problems tonight, lots of use of the seam ripper. I guess it's because I'm tired so I finally gave up. My husband is off tomorrow so we're going to work on the chicken coop. Hopefully that will go better. Cheryl |

Oh, dear....sorry about the bat thing. I get chills just thinking about you in bed with the bat flying over your head. I know that exterminators can help with the bats. Are they in your attic?
If you need any help with your apron or bias tape, just let me know. You can always email me.

Yes, it was a baby doll style with the high waist seam and two flounces. Very cute little girl looking, and it was just enough for a little girl's apron. I slit it up the back and finished the edges. Then used the sleeves for the waist band and ties. I added lots of rick rack at each flounce and used the front snap placket (like on a Henley t shirt) for the pocket. Oh, here is something that has had me smiling all morning. My youngest daughter filled the pocket of the babydoll apron with plastic easter eggs and wore it to school today. I asked her why she was wearing it to school with the pocket stuffed full of plastic eggs and she said that today was career day and she wanted to be an organic egg farmer like Mary Jane Butters! LOL....Gosh, I love my little farmgirls!!! I guess leaving my MJ book out for the girls to look at and read is paying off! She is only in 1st grade, but is reading books like The Hobbit! Phew....got that from her daddy!
Happy day to all...gotta get some laundry done!

You are sure having fun with the aprons (I hope to soon once things slow down a bit here. Still can't find our friends. Very frustrating. But everyone is in good spirits and all. Lots of very possitive thinkers. ) Your two new aprons are cute. Nothing like reusing always better the second time around. I hope you continue to have fun

Hi, LOve your aprons and stories Georgann. Will mail those pearl buttons soon as I can dig deep enough to find them. The storage closet is really a black hole where things tend to get sucked in and rarely seen again. My latest thing is machine embroidery. I am mastering the Janome 300E so if you want apron pockets embroidered let me know what design , floral or kitchen things, that is if you don't mind a contrasting fabric.
Heidifritz/aka/ mom
Mother used to decorate my clothing with Ric Rac way back .That's another story.LOL!

Georgann, that story about your daughter is so cute! I always wanted to have a daughter but I have 4 great boys, well, 2 of them aren't exactly boys anymore. I don't have an attic, my husband and boys have a habit of leaving the door open too long when it's dark out and the bats end up getting in. I guess 4 bats in 4 years isn't too bad but there's not much that scares me more. I have a log house and in my room the ceiling/roof comes up into a peak and they seem to find lots of areas to hide. I didn't get much chance to work on my apron today but if my husband goes back to work tomorrow then I'll be able to. I have the other 2 aprons that I had cut out last week too but I ended up being a little bit short on the material. It's hard to explain which piece it is that I'll need to substitute. I'll try and put a picture of the pattern on here. Is it hard to attach pictures on here? Cheryl |

MOM!!!! I love that you are here with all of the farmgirls!!! Ladies Heidifritz is my MOM....really!!! I'm really looking forward to the buttons mom. I have an apron planned that will use them. I tried to call you a couple times today, but your line was busy. Wanted to tell you I bought a bolt of muslin!! I also found 100% pure cotton yarn. Can you embroider a floral trellis around a neckline and sleeve openings for me? I have something special planned! I'll tell you about it next time we talk.
Oh, Farmgirl friends...my Mom was born in Texas, and married an Iowa farmboy. So her farmroots are deep!
Love you mom, Say, I wanted to ask if you wanted some vintage rick rack. I've got your thread box ready to go out and wanted to put rick rack and vintage cotton lace in it too if you'll be able to use it. If not, that's ok. Going to the post office tomorrow.

Hi Cheryl, I haven't been able to attach pictures here yet, so that is why I blog. Try setting up a blog at blogger.com. It is really easy and free. The pictures are really easy to post over there.
I would love to see your aprons and/or your pieces. As you all know, I'm nutty about aprons. Maybe I have some fabric that would coordinate with yours to fill in the gaps. I'll have to take a picture of my fabric stock and post it. I bought a wall unit just to hold it and there are still boxes of it in the attic! LOL
Mom, Heidifritz has seen it. Scarey huh Mom?
Cheryl, I always wanted a log home. I bet it is wonderful! Tell them boys to shut the doors!! I've always been afraid of a bat getting in too, because I leave my screenless windows open alot too! Which reminds me, I need to take the fan out of the front window and shut it.
Later, Georgann |
