Hello All,
Am another gal from Florida/North Florida/Panhandle area.I'm a stay at home mom of 3 (ages 15, 6, and 22 months) married to a wonderful man for 16 yrs..I also homeschool my children.I grew up in South Florida where we had a delightful mix of animals around us at all times..ranging from chickens to pet squirrels, to even an attempt at raising a orphaned baby skunk who was aptly named .."Mr. Peeuwe". I have been transplanted into the city for the last 16 yrs. and must say that we all are now beginning to long for a much quieter/rural type lifestyle..as the saying goes.."you can take the farmgirl out of the country..but you can't take the country out of the farmgirl". We are looking to eventually relocate to the South Georgia area where we aim to buy a bit of land and have a small farmette.Anyhow..wanted to chime in and say a good old farmgirl "howdy ya'll".

Howdy back, Tina!! Welcome to the forum. Everything you said about farmgirls is true- we just have to get back to our roots! I wrote down the items that you collect in my list- if I come by anything, I will send it on to you. Funny, we all have similar taste in our collections. Just one more thing us farmgirls have in common!!

Welcome, Tina! We DO have quite a few farmgirls from around your area here - how fun! I laughed at Mr. Peeuwe - my dog was skunked just a couple of days ago... It takes a brave young farmgirl heart to raise a skunk!!! I think you'll really like it here. Enjoy!!

Hello,
And thank you all so very, very much for the warm welcome. I know I'll have a great time here. To reply to a few..1.yes, it does seem that alot of us collect the same type of things...that is neat...perhaps because we all like the "country" type feel to the items we collect, as well as the mix of practicality along with the bit of feminine..just good old fun girl stuff? and things that seem to have a story ..if not actually, at least we can make up an imaginary one..by thinking of.. who might have worn the old hat on a night away from the farm, or who's loving hands stitched that quilt square for a family member..who scribbled down the old recipe on the recipe card you found in an old tin?that sort of thing...
2. Where in Georgia?..we are looking into the Thomas County areas/Thomasville, Moultrie and Pavo areas and have our eye on a small 6 /nearly 7 acre place...we do know that whatever we decide we want an area with land so that we can have a garden, some chickens and ducks and I have made it known that if a pond is dug on the property for fish that I intend to have a pair of swans...o.k., o.k. they may eat some of the fish..but..I'm spoiled..I have to have something that looks elegant too..not just a bit of the practical..in the chickens and regular ducks for practicality..but yep..gotta have something in there once in a while.."just cause" :0)
3. now..about Mr. Peeuwe" for those that want to know.."the rest of the story"...
I was 12..thereabouts and my family and I lived in a big old house in Arcadia, Fl...at the time we were in town, but of course that didn't bother us as Arcadia is a rural type town anyhow..so we didn't mind that...anyhow..my dad used to work in the orange groves as the person tht helped to clear the irrigation ditches with the backhoes..one day he came upon an orphaned baby skunk that was being attacked by cattle egrets..so he lowered the boom of the backhoe and walked across the ditch to it and picked it up and put it in his pocket and resumed his work, taking time to feed the baby skunk bits of his bologna sandwich during the day...when he was getting ready to leave work on the work bus /van that would drop him off at home every evening...he was always ribbed by a Mexican friends named Paco..who would always call my dad "El Gordo" meaning "the big fat one".. because yes, dad certainly liked his Rc colas and moonpies in his lunch box nearly every day..so he had a belly to show it..well Mr. Paco was sitting behind my dad...who had not turned around but was just chuckling to himself..as he had been ribbed by Paco for a while..but little did Paco know..that the tables were about to turn...as my dad slowly turned around after taking the baby skunk out of his pocket and lifting the tail up ..he turned and "aimed" the baby skunk at Paco..and said "you mess a with me?" ...at which Paco got a big suprised look in his eyes and starts hollering "oh no, oh no Gordo I no mess with you!" ...then when dad got home..he left his lunch box with the baby skunk in it outside and came in and told my mom..."honey, I have found an orphan and he really needs a place to stay..he is waiting outside, but i need to know before I bring him in if you think we can make room for him?" (yes, my dad was quite the practical joker as well) so my dear mom..thought..oh gracious..a real kid..of course we can! ..anyhow..little did she know just what was in store! Anyhow..we took "Mr. peeuwe" in and since the local vet would not agree to descent the little guy..we decided to well..take our chances..we'd gather bugs for him and take him outside to hunt..this lasted for several months and he was quite a fun pet, actually quite clean like a cat...anyhow..one day my sister said to my dad.."daddy Mr. Peeuwe wants to see you" and between handing the skunk to my dad..somehow one of them lost their grip and the skunk began to fall..that was all it took! the skunk let loose right on my dad!..needless to say..you never ever want this happening in your house! trust me!..it took about a week of spraying potpourri and perfumes and whatever we could find to mask the odor to get rid of it!
WE gave the skunk to an outdoor classroom facility that taught children about wildlife..but on the way to deliver the animal to the facility my dad kept saying to my mom"oh, Clara, oh, Clara! ..I still smell it!" and mom said.."well, do you think it will do it again?..and my dad replied.."most definitely honey..it comes fully loaded!" ..so there you have it..our brief "Life with a skunk"

Tina - I am about 30 minutes from the Georgia border due south of Thomasville. I am very familiar with the land there. It is beautiful, unspoiled, very southern historic, and I love it! If you buy there, we need to make contact! Or even if you stay in Panama City! :)

Welcome Tina! I'm in the Tampa area, another farmgirl stuck in the 'burbs here! LOL I don't mind the 'burbs as long as my yard is big enough to have a garden and be far away from my neighbors! (We're on an acre currently.)
Glad you found us, I love it here and I'm sure you will too.

Welcome! I, too, and from North Florida and am sending you a big southern hug! I just read your skunk story and I am still chuckling :) What an adventure!
I agree with my mom, jpbluesky, that the area around Thomasville is just gorgeous. I sure hope your dream to own land there comes true! I am sure it is nice being close to the beach, though, in Panama City!
I, too, am a stay at home mom (of two young girls) - it is nice to be in great company on this site! There are so many women here who are great moms, and wonderful farmgirls! Welcome!
