I would love to try my hand at making my own plum jelly-

Our plum tree is absolutely loaded with beautiful purple Damask plums--When is the best time to harvest? When they are still firm or just a bit squishy??

Anyone have an easy plum jelly recipe to share?

Thank you!!

I'm curious about this too. The plums on my trees always stay so hard and tart! Anyone around here grow plums successfully?

I have heard when they are just starting to get soft.

I can't wait to harvest! I did locate a very easy plum jelly recipe, but OY the amount of sugar its calling for makes my teeth hurt just thinking about it!

Wish me luck...

I will post a photo of the finished product---

When I was growing up we had a small orchard (like 3 trees!) and two were plums. I would always eat them when they were starting to get soft. Harvest them when they taste good to you- they will ripen a bit off the tree but I always liked just plucking them from the tree and eating. It was wonderful!

Melody- Try making the chillover jam/jelly! It's amazing and you don't need any more sugar than what you want for flavor. I love it! When I get to make Jam next that is the only way I will ever do it again!

I pick our plums when they are getting slightly soft and come off of the tree easily. I make my plum jam with Pomona Pectin and everyone always loves it! I actually won 1st place in our county fair 2 years ago with it. I just use the recipe that comes with the pectin.

I don't think we carry Pomona Pectin in our grocery stores around here and I have never ordered any of MaryJanes Chill-Over mixture.

Darn it...

I just hate the thought of having to use sooo much sugar in my plum jelly-Does anyone want to trade some of my soap for some Pomona Pectin or MaryJanes Chill-over mix? I have never used either one but I am very interested in trying that for my jelly!

Just let me know!

Melody,
I make my own soap but I'm always loving others creations! :) I'd be glad to send you some Pomona Pectin if you're interested! I get ours from the health food store and I'll be going there this afternoon- I'll pick some up for you just incase!
