Karrieann, Oh my goodness - I Love Basset hounds and he is just the cutest. I love how he is resting his head on his "baby" or whatever he calls it. Praying for a complete recovery. How many more treatments does he have to have?
Hugs, Ruth

... The best out come would be that the first two shots should do it.... in two more weeks.. if all is A.O.K... no more treatments... except the preventives! If if shows that he has some worms still then he'll need one more shot.

This is Mr. Peabody's post in *Snoops*, a group on dogster.com (copy and pasted, I was his secretary)

quote:
The bad news first, two of them but easily correctable!
I have beginning stage of tape worms and I lost weight.

Dr. Hitchcock gave me two yellow pills and Abigail one for the tape worms.. they'll be smitherings in no time. Abigail doesn't have'm but we live togather, so we're being sure!

Now I weigh 43.6 lbs. Dogter said, it could be from the tape worms and I do drink lots lots of water. So, Mommie will monitor my weight.

Good report now, the heartwormies appears to be under control and I will be rechecked on that in six months.

I get to put on few pounds.

Dogter showed Mommie how to clean my ears deeply, with homemade solution of vinegar and alcohol (half and half) and cotton balls! Dogter called it ear spa treatment 'cuz I get massages on my ears!

We is on heart worm preventive stuff.. Heartguard Plus, Abigail has gotten F A T.. so we take same doses!

I got my vaccines and Abigail too, plus she got her yearly rabies shot.

Our nails got trimmed a lil.

Dogter said we have clean bill of health!

I can run and play and whatever I wanna do!

I like naps!

Thank Y'all fer all of the "POP" (Power of Prayer)

Oh my goodness! I LOVE those ears! He is so stinkin' cute. I am so happy that all the treatments have worked and he's good to go now. Yay, Mr. P! Good for you. Karrieann, that is such good news. Do you know about how old he is?

:o) Thank you Farmgirls!

I guessed him to be 5 to 6. When I asked the Vet with my guess. He checked out Mr. Peabody's teeth and said the lower number of my guess would be closer. (Shrugs)

He is funny the way he runs.. it is more of a canter with springs in his steps! (Giggles)

I'm so glad to hear Mr. Peabody is recovering so well. My sister has raised basset hounds for years and they are such cheerful clowns. Don't let those sad eyes fool you! They are very fun dogs.

Hay Kerrianne, U have yourself a wonderful companion who will give you his whole heart and you will be the winner. I know, I grew up with bassets and now my sister is in the link with another rescued, sad-eyed girl. Good for you both...and happy howling....they sing!!!

Thought you might like an update picture of Mr. Peabody
This was Christmas Day 2010

Update report:
Mr. Peabody has become very comfortable in his home with us.. to the point that he really acts like a hound. He counter surfs for food... he even ate four raw steaks that was left behind in the car till later. He enjoyed a third of my Spicy Italian subway sandwich with banana peppers! Oh, even helped himself to a banana which he carefully peeled it first. So... what I am saying.. we are laughing at our selves and enjoying the amusement and challenges of having a Basset! Abigail has become a tattle tale on her brudder! I am so glad that Mr. Peabody is so comfortable enough to get into his own mischief! YESSSS I am sunk when he looks at me with them eyes! LOL

So glad to hear that he is happy and healthy. We once had a beagle that counter surfed, I thought it was the kids leaving empty packages and plates on the counter, until a 10 pound roast disappeared. She ate the entire thing. Enjoy him!!!

Good for you for fostering him. I know you said that you contacted Animal Control, but have you had him scanned for a micro chip? That may be something to think about as you never know, maybe he is loved and he either was stolen or got away from someone a while ago or who knows stranger things have happened, at least then you will know for sure!

and do me a favor and like someone else said give him a kiss on the snoot for me!

Corie.... Mr. Peabody is our kid furever... meaning we are keeping him for good. Without knowing any facts of how he became homeless is beyond us.. but if we were to guess.. in our hearts, sadly we believe he was dropped off.. dumped. We tried to locate his home.. but it was likely that when they (former owners) realized that he was heartworm possitive, they didn't want to make the sacrifice to put up the necessary funds for the treatments that Peabody needed at the time... easily over 350.00 USD. He was very very sick but with the online group that I hang out with, they donated more than we needed for Peabody's care... that is when "we" officially adopted. We are truly blessed
(Oh, Vet said no chip was found)
Kisses for Peabody will be done!

Karrieann - It's awesome you're taking this dog on. The price you paid was very good for treatment. I've been told it's much more expensive around here, one person told me she paid $750+. I'm so glad the online rescue was able to help you out to pay for the treatment. I adopted both my dogs from a border collie rescue and it is really sad what people will do with their pets. I use to work for a shelter and it was common for people to bring in their dogs and not tell us they were heartworm positive. Being heartworm positive back then was a death sentence unfortunately. I'm glad shelters are now doing the treatments and giving these dogs a second chance. Oh, try having dogs intelligent enough to turn doorknobs! At least they don't turn the knobs on the doors to get out of the house - they turn knobs to get into bedrooms so they can sleep on the beds LOL The antics of our fur children :O)

Karrieann,
I am so happy to see your update of your furbaby Mr. P!!! He is so cute and he looks like he is nice and healthy now! I loved following this "tail" (pardon the pun, couldn't help it). Did you happen to read the blog entry I did about my little rescued furbaby? (I say "little", she is eighty pounds)! http://sfgblog.maryjanesfarm.org/default.asp?Display=38
Anyway, I'm just so happy for you both. Hugs,
Nicole
