We've got friends who were given three alpaca geldings by a breeder who'd boughten into the hype, then found she couldn't sell.
I was teaching a soap class not long ago when a woman showed up, all excited about her new alpacas that she'd talked her husband into. They'd taken out a loan for over $30,000! I just stood there, mortified, but never said a word. What do you say to someone who's just been swindled? And yes, I do mean swindled. She had no clue what she'd need to do in order to promote her animals and recoup any of her money.
That's where I get upset with the whole thing, I guess; because there are those that are promoting the product who aren't being honest with their buyers as to what it will really take to see a return. I'm glad you're an honest breeder, Grace, and willing to share the risks with folks

I must say that I have for the past three years been trying to get people just to take pencil to paper and look at the numbers. I had come home from a show and was in tears because two couples in their retirement years thought this would be a each get rich business. They were told so many things that unless you raise animals for a living you would have no way of knowing what was true. As a friend told me as I cried on the phone to her "You can not save the world from bad decissions, you just have to show by example" It was that day that I made the decission not to have alpacas anymore. I still have many friends in the alpaca business and that is their way of making a living - for me it is not. I wish everyone their best in life. I have had friends who have also lost tons of money thru other scams (IRA defaults, company downsizing close to retirement, business bankrupcies and many more)we all just have to use our common sense. Take care all and watch out for things that seem too good to be true.
