| Hello, everyone. OK, I did this backwards and started posting before introducing myself. My apologies! I was raised a city girl but have always felt that I am a farmgirl at heart. Laura Ingalls, Anne Shirley, Dr. Quinn are all my favorites, too. The last few months I have been learning to be a farmgirl in practice. DH (I really, really like the term Dear Hubby!) grew up on a farm and we have been transitioning into retirement on a farm. We bought a house with acreage and have the fields and pasture rented out to a local cattle/hay farmer, so I am learning all about cows and calves and hay and wildlife and I am loving it! I am really enjoying the Farmgirl Connection and experimenting with MJF products. |

From one Virginia farmgirl to another! I'm new here too. Your retirement farm sounds heavenly! Have you started your kitchen garden yet? I don't have enough sunny ground to do one. Again, welcome, I'm loving this Farmgirl connection too!

| Thanks for the warm welcome, Aunt George! I have not started a kitchen garden there yet, but am anxious to plant some vegetables by next spring, perhaps. I also need to move/expand my existing herb garden, and want to develop a rose garden. (I do have a single rosebush now, so I suppose I could say that project is already underway!) We are also going to try and move several plants from our existing house to the farm, so I am experimenting with cuttings and seeds as well as planning to dig up and replant as much as possible. I am trying to find a good sunny locale for the herbs; the rose(s) are in a good area already. Lots to think about! |

From another Va farmgirl. I am in southern Chesapeake. It's so great to here about your farm and the animals. My mom always said never trust anyone who doesn't like children or animals!We also share role models. I would love to see an episode of Dr.Quinn. Welcome to the farmgirl connection. How fun to hear about your retirement spot - on the farm. Good for you and your husband. By moving to a farm you know you won't really be "retiring," you will be busy, but with a busy you have always dreamed about, so then it's more like fun.
We will look forward to hearing all about it and learning what you learn. We have dreams of retiring to the farm, too, so keep us posted you will help us all reach retirement a lot sooner through your experiences.

Thanks for all the great welcome messages. Lynda, you said it just right - the transition phase of "retiring" to the farm is already keeping us very busy, and we would not have it any other way. We joke that we have to go back to work to get some rest during the week. It's such fun and encouraging to see what we have accomplished during each visit. A neat thing happened two weekends ago; when we got there we found a wonderful assortment of flowers growing all along the length of our driveway on one side...as if someone had scattered handfuls of flower seeds at some point in the past. We'd been feeling that this strip of ground was looking pretty straggly and overgrown since we do not have equipment to bushhog that area, but am I ever glad we didn't mow it, or we would not have known the flowers were there! There must be 7 different types of flowers; I have been cutting handfuls and bringing them inside the house to enjoy them even more. The previous owner (a natural farmgirl, I am sure!) must have had a sense of humor and loved flowers; we have found little patches of yellow daffodils growing in the middle of the field, too! It makes me smile!

HI jO .. AND WELCOME! BY 'TRANSITION' .. do ya'll still do the nine to five thing? did you move not far from where you were before? where in virginia? every summer, my HHHHH (handsome-honey-hunk-husband-hank) (HH) for short .. does the Bike Virginia trip through out southern Virgnia . .i'm gonna' tag along and 'antique' my way across the state! It's so much fun .. but OH SO HOT! He and about a thousand other bikers ride from town to town .. we camp out in college and high school football fields along the way (hotels in the local towns are an option too!) SUCH beautiful country .. my dad's family is from the Fredericksburg, VA area .. welcome welcome .. you're going to love chatting with all the farmgirls and i know we'll love hearing your stories too!
(HH and I retired to the backroads of Kentucky two years ago!)

| Hi Frannie ... yes, we are doing the 9-5, sort of - working flextime and taking turns with long weekends and days off to cover both places for the meantime. So wone of us is always at one place or the other, every couple of days. The two places are about 3 hours apart. By biking, do you mean bicycles or motorcycles? We like to do both, but have not ventured on long road trips - just local riding on bicycles and daytrips on the savage beasts. (Mine's a Suzuki Savage 650 cc, DH has an HD Road King.) |

Welcome to the forum!
I'm curious as to where abouts you are in Virginia? I spent a lot of time around Page County and the Shenandoah Valley, and Skyline Drive, about twenty years ago... The Charlottesville area, too. (Am mad at myself for not visiting Schyler and the Walton's museum there during my last visit in 1999.)

What a great surprise to see all the flowers in bloom. I wonder if the previous owner did that on purpose knowing what a great day it would be for you to have a bright spot along the way. And the fact that you are able to enjoy them inside, too is a double bonus. I'm happy for you and for the fun you are finding scattered about on your farm. Welcome Jo! I'm a newbie here also. Look forward to hearing more about the farm and how it all goes for you. It's fun to take it and transform it into what you want isn't it and yet somehow in so many ways it stays the same. I think that is what is so appealing to me about our farm. There is such a rich history here and you wonder how day-to-day life was 30,40, or even 60 years ago. I hope that your endeavor will bring you and your dh much happiness and many blessings! Hi all,
This is my very first day as a member of this incredible forum. I too am from Virginia but originally from north central WV. Will always be a West Virginia girl!!!
I am stuck in a subdivision and desperate to get out. Unfortunately the land around here has skyrocketed so don't know if I will ever get on a farm. But will always be hopeful!!!
I just can't wait to catch up on all there is to read. I've learned a lot already!
