Sometimes I get so terribly frustrated with people I am suppose to be close to. This past week i was showing an 84 year old lady how I needle tat. She knew how to shuttle tat and found this needle method amazing. Another lady friend of both of us was there and my 84 year old friend showed this other my work. The response was "I have much more important things to do with my time then waste it on such fidgety items of vanity". Okay I was in shock, and just laughed it off because I felt like I had entered a sequel of Anne of Green Gables. But that night I laid in bed upset with these words running through my head. Some people just don't like beauty around them.

Fidgety Items of Vanity? Sounds to me like she expressed her insecurities and jealousy by making a hurtful remark like that....Just blow it off and don't give it another thought. It's like 100 people tell you you're beautiful and 1 person tells you you're ugly. You fixate on the ugly comment. It's human nature. We're all guilty of it.

Well Miss "fidgety-item-of-vanity" not a very nice way to encourage others and appreciate the beauty and TALENT (which I have TRIED to learn and gave up on mastering)of others. P-shaw.
Marlyn- How wonderful of you for sharing your talent. How snobby for her not to appreciate it. Don't dwell on her negative words. Enjoy the beauty of teaching the appreciative friend and the blessing of having that talent to share!
Do what you love, love what you do. |

I had a similar exchange over a needlepoint project I was working on during a soap show-it was kind of slow so I brought it along and began "filling" in the background when a passerby stopped and said "I would do that but I find it so unimaginative!" I was flabbergasted and just laughed it off-Some people can be so insensitive-I too think it was jealousy on her part but why comment out loud? Sometimes I wish I could spat something back when that happens, but I always think of something waaaay later--
And besides I was taught early on... if you can't say anything nice don't say anything at all!
I think tatting is a wonderful art-wish I knew how to do that-

Amazing how insensitive some people can be with their remarks. I will never understand why people feel the need to be so obviously mean! I'm sure it is jealousy, but it has to do with personality as well. There are several things that I wish I could do (tatting being one of them) but I would never walk up to someone and make some snotty off handed remark about it because I was jealous. Some people are just plain mean!

I ran for "Possum Queen" of our local talent and variety review. I didn't win (2 years in a row, I'm the Susan Lucci of the Possum Queen contest!) and a local lady walked by after the ceremony and said "I'm sorry you're a loser". Oh, the comebacks that ran through my mind for the next few days! Just shrug it off, consider the source, and remember to keep a softer tongue yourself.

Some people have to cut others down to make themselves feel better. You should pray for this person because it is very obvious that she needs it.
I would be very happy to know how to tat.
Have a wonderful day.

Some people are just hurtful. Mean spirited and selfish. I bet odds that she is the kind of person that sits on her behinny and runs others down. I love it when someone say that they don't have time to do crafts because they are just too busy but ask me to make them something and then they offer to pay for the supplies so I can make it for them...NOT! I like the one of a kind, the satisfaction of knowing that I can use my mind, my hands, and my talents to make the finishing touches for my home or my wardrobe...with these "fidgety items of vanity". I want to ask them where they parked their broom but instead,(after I cool off) I pray for them and ask God to help me to understand them. I have learned over the years that some persons put their large mouth in gear before they engage their tiny brain.

Awwwww Sweetie-how rude! I am constantly amazed by the attitude of some people. I agree, I can't understand what she would gain or be happy about by being so mean. It serves no purpose at all.

It's funny you should say that, Mel (x'em out and move on), because one of the most frustrating things I ever heard someone say was so similar. It was a poetry class in college. I think we were discussing a poem by William Butler Yeats. The professor asked one of the students, a middle aged woman, for her opinion. She kind of shrugged and said, "I've learned that people from a certain background...like older European men...simply have nothing to say to me, and I try to tune those people out." Now, I can understand the need to not take hurtful remarks from individuals too seriously. But, come on! You think you have a right to simply write off the thoughts of whole groups of people? Isn't that essentially racism? Of course, I said so in class and it caused a big fuss. I think that lady hated me the rest of the semester! |

Marlyneleh, As hard as it may be, we should feel sorry for the woman who spoke. She is missing so much beauty in her life and in her relationships with those around her. I don't know if she doesn't recognize beauty or just doesn't feel she is worth that enjoyment.
Melody, I wonder what wonderful creative activities fill the days of your commenter. Is she writing the great American novel, composing a symphony, or painting a work of art? Filling in background takes patience which she may not have. You are working on something beautiful to enrich your life or the life of someone you care about. That is true creativity!
Melina, Maybe she meant "I wish you had won." in her socially awkward way????

Welp, count me among the socially awkward! Let me tell you, sometimes I'm as astounded as the next gal about what falls out of my mouth! I've even voiced my thoughts aloud, not realizing I actually mouthed them! Not till I get strange looks from people standing around me. I could tell you STORIES about my gaffes, which now, by-the-way, are kind of funny...but not at the time.
Then, come to find out, I have ADD and a very quick mind, which takes over and.....you get the pic. My mind overrides my mouth, in other words. I'm thinking way faster than my physical body can react. So, I do the socially awkward thing.
Then, on the other hand, when someone disses me, I am very good at retorting. Used to be, there had to be at least 30 minutes between remarks for me to think of something, but now? I can spout right off and put someone in their place. I think being a truck driver has taught me to do this.
You gals are WAY nicer than I am to such remarks!
