So I went out to my garden today and picked almost a gallon of peas. I have been shelling them for my daughter to eat as a snack. I have been preserving the "shell" part and would like to know. Is there anything i can do with them, or they best for the compost heap?
Thanks all Em

I throw some in the freezer with all my other odds and ends -onion skins, bean tops, kale stalks, celery bases. carrot tops, other garden scraps. Then when I get enough I boil down for vegetable stock. I use then or refreeze stock for when I need it. That way I feel like nothing goes to waste and I am sure there is some nutrition in there. I know my goats loved every pea shell they could get when I was shelling my peas this spring! LOL!!

Jane, very good idea. I never even thought of doing that. I will now. And my goats also love the shells. I picked some the other day and they nearly came over the fence to get them. And they also love kale which is so good for them. And they can have all they want because I don't like it. But do love peas. And I ate them raw too.

My chickens won't eat them. I tried, but wound up havin to rake them up. My 18 m/o ate my whole first pickin of peas raw as her lunch! I only got enough for a single serving, but I never dreamed she'd eat them raw like that.
