I'm in Northernish Wisconsin, so we don't over winter any animals right now.....but I want a dairy goat. What kind of structure do you keep your goats in, and can you have just one?

i am sure the other girls that know more will answer. these girls know it all. no you cannot just have one. they are sensitive affectionate loving herd animals. i have not seen any sweeter thing than a goats love for someone. there is lots to learn for sure. i learn new stuff about my critters everyday. as far as structure. wind rain moissture are problems. some breeds do better than others. thats my 2 cents lol sherrye

Hi Alicia! Like Sherry said, if you are going to have a goat you need to get two. They are herd animals and need to have the compony of another goat. Even if you play with it all the time it is just not the same. As for structure all goats need to have a small shed of some sorts to keep them out of the rain, wind, snow, etc.
What kind of goats are you looking at getting? Are they going to be milk goats?

| i live in interior alaska and my goats (including babies born in november) live in an insulated box with a heat lamp all winter. i have friends that leave theirs in a lean to for the entire winter. they thrive in either place. peace connie |

my hubby built me a cute little barn that we keep our four goats in-just make sure it's not too drafty they really don't like wind and it can be hard on them in the winter. and yes make sure you have more than one-things are more fun with more goats too!!!

I have a friend with just one goat but it lives with a pig and a couple of miniature horses. It is doing great, even though there isn't another goat it has companions. She also has 5 dogs and several regular size horses. Everyone gets along fine.

I have 7 goats & they spent the winter in a loafing shed. The does went into the pole barn when it was time to deliver their babies. Goats are very social & need to be with other goats. My girls will talk with me as soon as they hear the garage door open! It is so much fun!

I copied my large dog house, complete with being able to remove the roof, to clean out the inside occasionally. It has a small door way so they can get out of the rain and snow. On one side of their pen, I have hay stacked witha tarp on it to keep it dry. I have a large baord 4x 8 in between them and the hay or they would it it all day long. it also helps with wind block. I also have my potters bench on another side for help with wind and on another side I have amy picnic table turned on its die to protect from wind from that angle. I also have a plug in water bucket (5 gals) to keep their water from icing up. Their pen is around tree, with of course hog panels around the tree so they dont eat the bark. They talk to me when they see me outside or hear my car as well. They give me a 'kiss' when I feed them. Rufas and Becky have it pretty good!
