Yes, I think that makes sense and seal them in a zip lock bag as well. Ok, so I was looking at my stuff and pattern and I just need to confirm that the block will be 12 1/2" (12" Finished)? Because that makes a difference and I got confused and then I got scared b/c I started cutting. Ann
Oh geeze, Im getting nervous now and I don't want to goof this up! |

Ok Farmgirls
If I make the cut and I am included in the Block Swap. I understand the following:
Fabric - red and white Size - 12 1/2 inches Make - 12 blocks - keep one Note - I always wash my fabric. I would be concerned that if all fabric is not washed and blocks are received and that person washes their quilt, the red runs. (Which happened to me)

Joyce your block should measure 12 1/2 when you are done. The 1/2 inch which is 1/4 inch on each side of your block will be your seam. Does that help? We quilters call this size block 12 inch finished. That is the size you see on your completed quilt top. This is kind of hard to explain not face to face. Barbara

My fabrics are chosen, and the whites are washing! Next I'll wash the reds, and be ready to start! ( But first there's some major , manure related pasture renovation I have to finish...) ~ Mary LD

That is so cute!! Did you use a pattern? Bag Lady Diva had to bow out of the swap. Hope everyone else is going strong. I have finished 6 of my blocks. Sewing and unsewing today. I did my cutting and measuring this past weekend. Hopefully I will be done soon - then I will join the second group using a different block. This is a great way to use some of my fat quarters. I love to pick them up here and there...then not sure what to do with them. Barbara

My fabric is all washed & dried and now lined up for a good ironing out the wrinkles. Thanks to all for the compliments on my bear quilt. I did have a pattern that I purchased from Connecting Threads. |

Hi! I am fairly new to quilting...I have not used red fabric thus far. What have you all found to be the best way to prewash the fabric? Is there a "secret" way? ;)

Chels, with reds it is best to make real sure the color isn't running at all before using in a quilt. Most reds crock somewhat (excess dye rubs off) and some will even run (dye comes off in water).....what I do is handwash in mild dish detergent first, to get the most color out before putting it in a laundry batch. That way if I have a fabric in which the color gives me any extra special trouble, it can be contained. After a few rinses with lukewarm water, it should run clear. Then I throw it in the washing machine on the setting I would use to clean the finished quilt, and run it through a hot dryer to make sure any shrinking is done there and then. If I can't get a red or other intense colored fabric to run clear after a few rinses in the handwash, I won't put it into a quilt that will be washed. Too much risk. There are things you can do to help set colors, like salt baths and such, but they are not 100% reliable. Better to use such procedure and such fabrics in craft items or a wall hanging that you don't expect to wash. Salt and those color grabbers might contain the color for a while, only to have the color run at a later wash time. HTH, Catherine |
