I'm sure you are all familiar with the phrase, "Behind Every Great Man there is a Great Woman".

Last night I was watching a PBS presentation about Dolly Maddison (president James Maddison's wife, not the snack cakes :)). And I have watched several other documentaries about various first wives such as Abigail Adams, Eleanor Roosevelt, etc. And I have to say, this cliche phrase doesn't even come close to defining their roles in their husband's presidency much less what their accomplishments for the nation. If I had to restructure the phrase it would read something like, "Behind every great man there is a great woman propping him up, paving his way, enabling him to do what he must, encouraging him, and without her there would be nothing at all, great or otherwise."

Reading the post by Denali, Women who Gather, inspired me to share this random thought with the farmgirls. It seems to me that essentially, women "make the world go around", but rarely get the credit they deserve for doing so.

Any thoughts?

My late hubby used to say: "without his tuff lil women standing next to him", most would not get done, and if by chance it did, it would be wrong. He hated the phrase "behind any man", he always said the women should either be next to her man, or ahead of him. If you look thru history, many women were the ones who ran, ruled and the power along side of men, but most men would not admit to it cause of the times and macho pride.

I watched the PBS presentation too! Loved it! She was really something huh?

Especially the fact that she lived to such a ripe old age---what that woman saw in the course of her lifetime.

I am planning on going to the library this afternoon to check out a book on her. She has inspired me...

Teresa - from all the things I've seen you post about your husband I really envy the tremendous man that he was. Not without his own faults I'm sure, but I wish more men were like him.

I totally agree, Sarah. I am not a feminist at all but I do believe women are the driving force in this country. And are starting to be in other countries also. There are so many great women and they were not behind their men, but right beside them all the way.

Sarah, thank you again for your kind words. I wish ALL men were like him, this would be a much better world. He was Macho mans man (a harley riding man with many tattoos), he was sweet and gentle with me, our kids and all animals ( he was 6'7", 285 #'s and not an ounce of fat), he was as tuff as a bear when he needed to be, but he was my teddy bear...he would give the shirt off of his back to help anyone who needed/deserved it, and many who did not, just because. My heart and soul ache for him every single minute of everyday...but there where a few times when , yes, I could have smacked him up side the head, but tthat idea passed quickly, lol.

I always said the bigger the man the more gentle he was. My DH is 6'3" 250#'s no tattoo's (I have 3)beard and belly just like Santa Claus. Personalilty like Santa most days, sometimes like a 2 yr old. Rides a Honda ST1100 and I thank God everyday for placing him in my life.

I started to watch the Dolly Maddison show but my grandson would not fall asleep with the TV on.

Hope all your days are Sunnydays.

It seems to me that women tend to the million little details that make everything work.

I know my husband has said that if i were not here, he would not eat and he would wear dirty clothes!!! It is a lot of the little things that we do that are taken for granted!
