As a certified Aromatherapist I have had some experience with them. Their information concerning essential oils can be on the questionable side so if you are buying their books etc. please research other opinions before you take what they say as the way to do things. I have also had the experience that their essential oils can sometimes be diluted when they are advertised as pure. I would just say if you plan to deal with them be cautious and do your research. My experience was some years ago. They have some nice oils but if you buy them test for purity. They have some nice blends but I find they are more often not pure essential oils they are diluted or use to be. Just be cautious, do your research and if you are happy with what you find then I would love to hear your results.

Hello Beth, I am thinking of becoming an aromatherapist any suggestions on schooling? This would be a later in life career but have always been interested in the homeopathic field.

I got my first certification from Michael Scholes (the American School of Aromatherapy but that was 16 years ago) then one from the Chelsea Clinic in Inverurie Scotland. I am not even sure if either of those schools are still there. I would suggest you cruise the net and find something close to you. You can do some certifications over the internet but I think hands on is better. Wish I could be more helpful. I wish you the best of luck. I would say though to be cautious if you are thinking of Young Living.

I would be interested in hearing more about YL products and the impurity or dilution. I'm not an aromatherapist so I'm not schooled in anything, but all we have used for EOs for the past 7 years are YL oils. What should we be looking out for? We've not had issues or anything, but then again...I'm not an aromatherapist, so I'm not nearly as "up" on things as you probably are, Beth! Would be interested in what you have to say. :)

To test the purity of the oils you are using get a white coffee filter and put a couple of drops of the oil on the coffee filter if after it drys you have an oily spot then you know that the oil has been diluted. If you are using the oils on your body you will want to dilute them with something but I always wanted to do the diluting myself so I would know what it was being diluted with. My experience was years ago and there was alot of talk so I am not sure they are still doing it. But, as I say just check your stuff. I get my oils from Mountain Rose Herbs. They are on line and I love their stuff. All organic or they tell you it isn't. I have used their stuff for years and never had a problem. They even use recycled shipping stuff.

I use both YL(& no I am not a distributor) & Mountain Rose Herbs, and have to say, that for anything therapeutic grade, or anytime I am putting directly on my body, I would always go with Young Living. Several of their oils even have dietary info, which I have never seen with any other company. I use Mountian Rose for several other applications, and they are a very good company to deal with as well, and my experience has always been positive. YL's founder, Gary Young, is a little too much for me sometimes, but I have been using their products for over 20 years, have strayed, but always come back. Their blends are out of this world; I keep several in my desk & use for a myriad of situations.
One perfect example(& sorry if this is TMI), but accasionally I will get tender breasts, & lavender is great for breast inflammation. I would always put a few drops over to the side of my breast, & it always helped. Well, I tried with some other brands, & I actually had a rash break out on my breast, & in one instance, to my nipple, I freaked out, I thought I had that rare breast cancer,& here it was just a non therapeutic lavender. So only YL lavender goes on these girls!
My mom went to Turkey to study with Gary Young about 25 years ago, & she will not use anything else. She is hooked and will not even consider another brand, but, she will be 80 in May, & does not take any meds & uses YL oils on herself every day. SO I can't argue with that kind of success.
It is so funny, everything from her house smells like oils, & last summer I was doing some gardening and needed some extra newspaper. She donated some & as I was gardening and wetting the paper I could smell oils.
Whatever brand you go with, they are truly an asset, but just be careful when putting on your body.
As I type I have YL's Joy and some Bergamot on my chest area. Smells heavenly. |

There are no regulations concerning Essential Oils so what is or is not therapeutic???? That was a word being thrown around several years ago so companies could convince the lay person that their oils were better. I was very involved with Aura Cacia at that time. Taking Oils internally is never a good idea without alot of care and monitoring. Oils taken from food plants being the exception. But they should be used with caution. Some of Young Livings advise is contrary to what all other reputable Aromatherapists teach which makes me say to be cautious. I wonder sometimes why people that promote Young Living are against caution.
I totally believe EO's work but caution is always needed when using them. There are some holistic healers that will not use them at all because they are so strong. I am glad your Mom gets good results with them but the word therapeutic in reference to Essential Oils is just a word. I know that Young Living was one of the first companies to use it and their advertising department is very good. If they work for you that is wonderful and if you are happy by all means keep using them. What can it hurt to read more than one book, look up your information on more than one web-site. Talk to more than one aromatherapist.
I just can't say it often enough to please be careful, do your research and with Essential Oils remember that unlike everything else in this country More is not better, Less is better.
Yes some of the YL blends have a wonderful aroma, some of their oils are very nice but knowledge is always a good thing and research and it can never hurt to test your oil and try other companies. I learned long ago that smelling them is the best way to choose your oils. I have oils from several different companies. I prefer Mountain Rose. I even have a couple from Young Living.
Be cautious and do your research. As a certified Aromatherapist that is my best advice.

I have Joy from YLiving also... and Valor. Those are my favorite oils to wear. I wish they weren't so expensive and I would use them in my goat milk soap. I buy from Brambleberry for my soap oils and Auracacia. Best just to try different stuff and see what you like.....there are many good companies out there.

Valor is wonderful! I've been out for a long time amd they are expensive. Have you ever tried Harmony or Peace & Calming?

I love Harmoney !!! I still have a little of that left. Peace and caming I have never tried.
So far I have tried the Valor, Joy, Harmony, Immune, Bergamont(love that for bedtime), lavender, Rosewood, Pine,Pepperment, White Agelica. A friend of mines mom sent me some partial bottles to use when I was going through a very stressful time. She was a lifesaver for me and it brought me such comfort. It mentally was a great help to me. I still use them everyday.
I will have to try the Peace & Calming when I get some extra money. I sure could use some of that...lol.
I love essential oils. I think they are a wonderful asset to have around.

I also love White Angelica. Peace & Calming is very nice to have at bedtime as I am not a big lavender or bergamot fan. I know, sounds weird, but I don't like lavender very much :-)
They are wonderful healing tools and have helped me through stressful times, too.

Its not weird Jonnie. Lavender can be quite strong. I am not a big fan of YL lavender its to pungent. But I love Auracacia's lavender. But I like Lavender in my soap mixed with other oils the best like Lavender/rosewood or Lavender/Patchoulie and Lavender/lemon. Those are good combos.

Indeed they are. My favorite mix of oils is Patchouli and Vanilla. Do you sell your soap?

Yes I do. I do only one show a year to help raise money to help the Rambler center pay for the heating and electric bill.Its a community center and we use one of the rooms for knitting and weaving classes. Otherwise I just sell it privately from my farm. I sell it for $3.50 a bar. Its a castile soap with goatmilk. I started making it because I break out from commercial soap. Its a small hobby. I enjoy it.
