I seen the post for wreaths and reminded me of an article in the Herb companion years ago. Not sure if anyone has posted this before but its really nifty ! They had you make a wreath using herbs from 2 different groups of herbs depending if you were going to make soup with chicken or beef and if you were a vegan you could use either group of herbs. You make the wreath using herbs that are fresh and can use them right away or let them dry and give them as a gift with a recipe for the soup that they should be put in. I tried it and it was really good and fun.
The wreath you make is a circle about the size of the palm of your hand in circumference. They have you take a woody herb and bend it into a 4 inch loop and wrap the ends around each other to start out.I used rosemary to start mine. It was fresh so it would bend to the shape of a loop. Then continue to add the herbs from your list. You can use a long herb leaf to secure the herbs and tuck in the loose ends or use a pretty ribbon to secure it.Make sure you remove the ribbon before cooking. You can really make it prettyand tasty by adding little dried red peppers and chive flowers. Herbs for chicken soup you are to pick at least 6 or more:
Rosemary-Thyme- Celeriac leaves-Sage- Garlic chives -Sweet marjoram Small lovage leaves- Parsley- Lavender- Lemongrass- Winger savory Lemon basil
Herbs for the beef or pork group pick at least 6 or more:
Rosemary- Chervil- Thyme- Savory- Onion leaves- Chives- Garlic chives Tarragon- Oregano- Basil- Hyssop- Bay- Small hot peppers
The recipe for Winter chicken Soup that was in the magazine:
21/2 quarts of water 2 chicken breast cut in pieces 1 stalk of celery.... I used less 1/2 cup of diced onion 2 carrots peeled and diced 1/4 cup of rice of pasta,(kluski noodles are great) optional cooking wreath salt and pepper to taste
Bring water to boil and add chicken and veggies. Cook until the chicken is tender, about 20 minutes. Add rice or pasta and reduce heat to a simmer, cooking 10 to 15 minutes. When you add the rice or pasta, also remove the ribbon from the cooking wreath and add to the pot of simmering soup. Simmer until done, add salt and pepper to taste, remove wreath and serve.
Vegetarian friends can us this recipe
21/2 quarts of water assorted, diced veggies, carrots, turnips, celery, cabbage, including onion and garlic 1/4 cup of rice or pasta (kluski noodles are great or homemade) cooking wreath Salt and pepper to taste
add veggies to boiling water and simmer until tender about 20 minutes. Add rice or pasta and simmer until tender. Add cooking wreath with the ribbon removed and simmer another 10 minutes. Remove and add salt and pepper to taste.
Hope everyone enjoys this as much as I did.

I think these would make excellent gifts, not to mention they'd be great to have on hand for soup making in the winter. Thanks so much for sharing this, Linda!

Thank you Sarah.
I thought I would post this so maybe when starting spring herb gardens we could plant soup herb gardens!!! Because to make the wreaths the herbs need to be fresh so they can be bent into the shape of the wreath. I know I need to plant some more herbs to add to what I already have.
