Hi all!!! My DH noticed today one of our black australorps combs is dark rusy red no damage of any kind. They have been stuck in the coop for almost 3 months now but they are spoiled, plenty of clean straw to keep warm and heat when needed, plenty of windows and air circulates well. She doesnt seem sick but this is our first winter with them so we wondering if this is normal. The others combs are normal red. Any ideas? Thanks for any advise or thought you might have!

Thanks Sherry but I don't think so my DH saw her in a box laying. He did see a little blood in there too. He didn't tell me that before.

Sounds like an injury. It could be the rooster got overly amorous or a touch of frostbite. Just watch her and if the others start pecking you'll need to do something to cover the blood so they can't see it. I always use a blue antiseptic spray.

Thanks for the advise! She is fine now. Thanks for the blue antiseptic spray advise Melina. I have a hen that is getting picked on and I will get some for her.

My guess would be frostbite as well. I'd love to know where you get the blue spray. I've never needed it, but have heard of it, and would love to keep some on hand.

I agree, it is probably frost bite. I also use a thick yellow salve for my combs, even for frost bite. It is called Bag Balm. It works and keeps everyone else from pecking at it!

God Bless
