A few years ago I knitted my first pair of socks on DPS. I have worn them out. I'm thinking I will felt them and use the felt to make something else. If you were felting socks and wanted to get as much "fabric" out of the process as possible, would you cut the socks open and then felt or just throw them in, as is?
I'm assuming that the next pair I knit, I will need to knit in some reinforcement (right?)

Angie, I've never felted wool socks before but I've felted alot of wool sweaters. I usually just throw them in the washer the was they are, on the hot water setting. Then after they are felted I can cut them up to repurpose them and they don't unravel. If you have any other questions about the process let me know. Dana

Angie I would also felt them first. If you cut them before felting I'm afraid they would start to come apart and you would lose valuable fabric. Good luck with the felting, and good luck with knitting a new pair!
