One of my favorite things is something my Mom who taught second grade did with her kids, and we did/do as homeschoolers. Take a clear drinking glass and cut some blotter paper to make a cylinder that will fit tight against the inside of the glass (hope this makes sense. Then take string bean seeds, corn, peas etc seeds and place a few between the blotter paper and the glass side. Then fill with water, and make sure the water never dries out. Over a few weeks time you can see the seeds develop and grow. This is great fun for a science or an arts project. Never get tired doing drawings and water colour paintings of the seeds as they develop. Have done the seeds at four periods of growth, framed and they make gorgeous wall hangings.
And since we don't eat the skin from the whole trout we catch, or the sand dabs, I like to take water colours and paint one side of the fish and then make fish prints. Have done this with vegetable food dyes as well. I print on cloth, as well as water colour tablet paper. Again its a fun, easy, science, art and or sewing project. Then I rinse the fish off well, and cook, then remove the skin, since we don't eat the skin. Also like to have my one chicken whom I love, walk in vegetable dye and then on a plain piece of fabric that I make into a skirt. Also like to use vegetable dye like we did as kids to make spatter paint prints. I place chicken feathers, leaves etc on fabric and then using a tooth brush and a fine rigid piece or mesh screen spatter paint over the feather or leaf, allow to dry and then when you remove the feather, leaf etc you have a beautiful print outline. Have also done this with seashells and even potato prints.

I would especially enjoy watching your chicken walk thru the paint onto the paper...how fun!!!

Cool ideas Beth. May have to try to bean thing tonight-may do photos a couple times a day and then try the water color paintings from my favorite stages of growth. The fabric painting sounds like fun, may try some this summer.

I remember doing that stuff myself and I did it with my daughter. Another fun thing for preschoolers especially is finger painting with pudding. I know adults that still sponge paint with potatoes.
Seeds were planted in a cup of dirt after sprouting.

| Beth, I used to teach art classes to kids through the local public library when we lived in NJ. We did almost all the things you suggested (except for the live chickens walking through paint, although that sounds like a lot of fun!). I had the most fun teaching those classes, thanks for reminding me! |
