RIP Buddy aka Bobo: My Chesapeake lab baby passed away in my arms two nights ago. He was suffering from Lymes disease, not to mention being 13 years old. He was my almost constant companion and the ultimate taste tester in my kitchen. All I had to say was "OH NO, it broke" and he would come running...( I bake and cook for others and "broken" pieces or bits don't go out ;)
It even feels lonely going to the restroom. I think he used to be afraid I would escape. How, I don't know since there's no window or other door. He would lean against the door waiting.
I miss him.

Our dear pets become a part of our lives and ourselves. We would never avoid loving them because of the pain of loss when they are gone because we know how deeply they have loved us and how it has enriched our life. You have my sympathy and understanding of the pain you are feeling. Do you have a picture of him you could share? It might ease the pain a little to honor him by sharing it here with others who love their animal companions.

I am so sorry for the loss of your Buddy. I love my cats and my dog. I've lost a few in the past, and remember all too well the heartache.

Sherry--I am so sad you lost such a good friend. My dog is going on twelve and I know I'll be a mess when I lose him. There's a poem by Rudyard Kipling--something about "giving your heart to a dog to tear". It's a perfect description of how dogs can get into your heart like no other animal can. Buddy isn't really gone--he's just waiting.

Oh Sherry how sad. :( I lost my golden retriever 2 1/2 years ago. It was so hard... only time will help you heal. I didn't ever want another dog, I was afraid I would compare them all to her. 5 months later though, we brought home 2 golden retriever puppies, and it helped a lot. Honestly sometimes I think she has taught them her bad habits, I think she "speaks" to them, lol!
Hang in there, before you know it, you will be able to talk about and laugh at the funny things you remember, instead of cry. We would all love to see a picture of him.

Sherry, I am crying for you as I write this, my dog buddy is my best friend!!
My day starts and ends with him. I can't imagine not having him around, and

Dear Sherry,
I am sorry for your loss. I lost my Mr.Bean at the age of 15. Thank goodness he died in his sleep and I didn't have to make the decision to end his life. I recently rescued my new dog Molly McGee from a shelter. She doesn't replace Mr. Bean but has brought such unconditional love and joy to my life. There are so many dogs in shelters waiting for their forever homes. Maybe your heart will be ready someday to let another one in. What a nice peaceful way to leave this world, in the arms of someone they love.

Sherry,
I share your pain. It's so hard having to lose a beloved pet. We made the difficult decision to put our 16 year old terrier mix to sleep in early December. That's one of the hardest things I ever had to do, but it was the right thing to do for Winston.
I wanted to wait several months before getting another dog, but we adopted a new furry friend from a rescue group last Sunday. My husband absolutely loves this dog. Our new friend, Boomer, is quite the clown. Sometimes, I swear old Winston is coaching him from up above. 
You'll never forget your old friend and time does help ease the pain.
You might also want to read a copy of Dog Heaven by Cynthia Rylant. It's a very sweet, touching, children's picture book about what happens to dogs after they cross the Rainbow Bridge.

Sherry I am so sorry to hear of your loss. Been there a time or two and know how much it hurts. When we lost our Bo 5 years ago I thought I could never have another dog, 4 days later we brought home two pups as the house was just too quiet. And like Brenda said I think Bo talks to these two and tells them things. In October we found out our Clay had cancer on his tongue, he had surgery and most of his tongue was removed but he is doing well, just couldn't bear the thought of losing him. Hang in there with time the grief will erupt less often.

Sherry, I just read this and send you my deepest sympathies. That's one of the great things about this forum. These ladies all feel for you and will allow you to grieve for your beloved pet. I've lost several pets in my time and each have left a hole in my heart. I too feel that they are not gone, just waiting for us to join them. My Cairn is 13 and I know we don't have much time left with him but everyday is special with an older dog. It sounds like Buddy/Bobo was much loved and had a wonderful life. {{{HUGS}}}

We understand. For those of us who have loved pets for any length of time there has been loss involved.Remember those golden moments and the love you shared. Don't be afraid to love again.
December 26th we took our old terrier to the vet. DH was afraid he had pneumonia. Turns out he has a heart murmur, probably due to a heartworm condition he has had for years. He hadn't been eating, had been breathing terribly deeply and coughing. The doc told us he might be with us another couple of weeks or months, and gave us heart meds and a diaretic. Said he wasn't eating because when it comes to a choice between eating and breathing, breathing usually is the choice. He is doing a lot better now so I'm hoping for more time with him. He is back to bossing around the pups and begging for goodies.
While I was at the vet's, a lady brought in her old, old, old dog. She said he had been 80 lbs and was down to 40. He had booties on his back feet because it helped keep him from slipping because his back legs were so weak. When the vet called them in she had to carry him. She brought him in because he was having accidents in the house. No wonder, he is so ready to go, no matter how much she loves him. I hope the vet talked with her about what was kindest for him, not just how much she loved him and wants to keep him around. He was a gentle sweet dog but I felt so sad for both of them. Sometimes the kindest thing is to let them go with peace and dignity.

I'm very sorry to hear of your loss. October 30, 1998 I lost both of my beloved dogs, Chelsea and Dailey in an apartment fire.
