I am a new spinner - trying to learn how to spin wool and alpaca fibers into yarn. Right now, I am still at the "art yarn" or "thick 'n' thin" stage. I hope to have more time to practice now that some of my Christmas sewing projects are done. Since I started spinning, I have also gotten back into knitting - finishing up some old half-finished projects and starting some new ones.
My Spinning Wheel is a Louet S10. I got into this because my son and d-i-l are raising alpacas and llamas for fiber, so I will have a ready supply.
Do any of you other Farmgirls spin?

Hi Linda
I am a spinner!!!
I make a living out of anything fiber and spinning is my heart and soul. I have many wheels including electric but my best bud is my Ashford Joy... He has been with me for 13 years and I just about live with it. I also drop spin and also have many of those - my two fav's are one that was made for me when I spent time in Iceland where I learn about the 175 Icelandic sheep that was coming to my farm. I also have one that was made for my hand when I broke several fingers - it was made by a craftsman who is no longer on the planet - I think of him evertime I pick it up and bless my luck for having one of the last one's he made.
As you can tell I LOVE anything spinning and my life revolves around it. As Sheri states we have many spinners over at the BarnYard group under everything sheep and goat. However, we will talk about everything fiber, fur and farm...
Great to meet other spinners

That sounds wonderful Brenda - you will find some great folks to share your love of spinning with....
For many years I participated in the Estes Park Wool Market and also the Taos Wool Festival - you make life long friends and keep those skills every increasing.
While sitting in the barn watching over my expecting Angora and Cashmere goats I could not help but grade their fleeces. I can not wait to get my hands on some of these fleeces - I am addicted! Heck I even plucked some of my Great Prys fur and brought it into the house for spinning. I admit it is a sickness but one I hope I never get over...

I too spin on a Louet S10, my favorite wheel. I have a spinner's flock so fiber is available at all times. I am currently spinning one ply heavy wool yarn for weaving rugs. I like the louet because I can spin thin or thick yarn, I learned on it and I think that is why I like it best.

That's one reason I bought the Louet from one of my spinner group - I love working with thicker yarns. My daughter-in-law is looking for a used Louet, or another beginners wheel if we can find one. She spun a bit on my Louet and liked it. She and my son and their family live in the country and are starting to raise alpacas for fiber; in addition, they have a llama, a lapaca, goats, horses, donkeys, and chickens. Quite a menagerie.
I will post on the sheep and goat thread about a used wheel. Maybe someone will have or know of one.

Hi Ladies! I hope to get into spinning soon. When winter settles down. I have recently inherited a spinning wheel. I have never attempted before, but look forward to the challenge. |
