I just purchased a set of 3 vintage braid aid tools w/instructions-thinking of using it for tote/purse handles,as well as making instrument straps. What other things can you make with them besides rugs? Oh-and for small rugs,is there something you can put on the bottom so it doesn't slip & slide?

I got some of those from my grandmother, and they're attached to a braided rug in progress that she was making - I think I'll finish it and see how I like making rugs. Mine came with a whole booklet on things - stair runners, chair covers, pocketbooks, things like that.

I'll bet your grandmother would be happy with you finishing the rug she started! Pocketbooks & chair covers, huh? I never thought of that.

What does the braiding thing look like so I can look for one?

Ok...how do you braid a rug that doesn't turn into a giant bowl? My grandmother made beautiful rugs, wool ones that held up forever, I tried it....made a giant wool bowl that ended up cupped over the doghouse for insulation......

What ya need to do is increase more often to keep it from curving up. I'd suggest using a pattern to tell ya how often to increase. I love homemade rugs. I make them as big as I can get but still small enough to fit in the washer.

That is so cool I will have to go back and see if it makes more sense as I read it more. I really want to learn to do this.

One of my booklets that came with my Gramma's Braid Aid said to make wider laces around the corners/curves so it doesn't "bowl". I don't know, I've never done it, but none of the rugs my gramma ever made did it.

Thank you! I will pull up your tutorial and give it another go. My mother-in-law gave me alot of wood fabric so I can make some great rugs! That is if I can figure it out! lol!
