OK ladies I need tips...I have the hardest time getting the trim straight on pot holders. Is there a trick to putting that many layers in the bias tape and getting it even and straight? I have attempted several and they all come out cockeyed. I don't care how slow or careful I try to be. And I can't seem to pin it on straight because of the layers making it too bulky.

Begin each morning with a song in your heart.

I use my walking foot to get through all the layers and I also sew it on like binding a quilt.

I am going to follow along with all of you fine ladies. This idea of a project a month is just wonderful. My goal is to make at least 4 of each project if feasible.

Hi Michelle
If it's not too late, may I be included? This sounds like a greaaaaaaat idea! I love to sew and craft. Maybe this will keep me busy.

Since the weatherman is calling for 3-4 inches of snow Wednesday evening, I went to Wally World and picked up some cotton batting. This way I won't be stuck at home with nothing to do. Hopefully I can use up some of my fabric stash.

I know this thread is for making 2010 christmas gifts, but yesterday I started making birthday gifts for my 9 Grandchildren. I found at JoAnns a great patteren for a Tee-Pee. It is made out of PVC pipe and heavy cotton duck fabric. It sooo cute. My first one is going to be ready for this Saturday. I will posy a pic when I am done. I asked the older Granddaughters if they wanted one, they are 13 and 10 and they both thought it would be great to read in and have some alone time. It sure does feel good to be making something that they will use and enjoy no matter what the age.

Blessings,

I have started my set of potholders, I have stuffed them so thick that I am having a hard time getting the Bias tape straight. I put a layer of quilted batting, insul brite, and 2 layers of fabric (front & back) I don't want anyone who uses these to get burned! Any suggestions on getting the bias tape to stay straight? I guess I could use a million pins!

ooo ooo ooo I have an idea! What about simple jewelry gifts for a topic? like bracelts and such? Not that I do any jewelry making but I have always wanted to give it a try. That would give me an excuse to learn.

BTW I haven't been able to start on my pot holders yet. My big project has taken more time than I anticipated. My fat old man that I am making finally has feet that will fit in his shoes. Tomorrow I have to finish altering his clothes and get his body dressed. Then I plan to take a little break from him and at least pick out fabrics for my potholers.

I ordered my pattern for my pot holders from Vannila House on Monday. I should be finnished with the tee pee by the time it gets here then I can start on them. I have gathered my fabric for them and checked on the price for insul brite at JoAnns, 5.99 a yard. I got in the mail some coupons for JoAnns 3- 50 percent off and one 40 percent off regular price they never put that batting on ale. lol I think I will use them on that. So I think we are off to a good start.

I realy like the jewlery idea. I have never made any but I would like to try.

Blessings,

I just realized last night that I'm almost out of insul bright. I'm so glad our local fabric shop carries it. Now only if they are open today. We get a little bit of snow and seems to close everything up.

Keep up the good work ladies. I have several pot holders cut. I switch between Valentines Day projects and the Christimas 2010 project.

My family and I are headed off to Oklahoma for vacation this weekend, so I won't be able to post for a little over a week.

Love the idea of the jewelry. Before February comes lets post some pics of simple pieces you all think we can create easily. My daughter just picked up a bracelet at Forever 21 which was very caute and looks to be simple to make. I will post a pic when we return.

Take care!

Have a good day!

I bought insul brite at Hobby Lobby for $2.49 a yard, I thought it was $7.49, but the fabric attendant wrote $2.49, a good deal if you ask me! I guess I read it wrong, I was glad, I got to use my 40% coupon on my crochet hook I needed : )

WOW!!!! You got a great deal! The last time I bought insul bright, it was on ebay and I paid about $7 for it and that wasn't including shipping.

I figured out how to get the bias tape around the edge of my potholder, it looks ok, I need some stronger pins. I love the vintage fabric I found at the quilting store. It made a nice new "old fashioned" pot holder ; )
Perhaps I should have bought more than 1 yd. !

Here's a tutorial page I found at Fire Mountain Gems for how to make different pieces of jewelry, teaching techniques and such.

Thank you ladies. I don't have anything to contribute yet, but these are great ideas and I will put something on here in the near future. I am making most of my gifts from now on and this has been very motivating.

Enjoy the little things, for one day you may look back and realize they were the big things.

I finally found the time to at least get my pieces for 2 pot holders cut. I plan on sewing them up later this evening. They won't be anything fancy though. I'm trying to use up my scraps and trying to get motivated after the "big freeze." Anyhoo I hope you ladies are having fun with your potholders!

This is one idea I had for jewelry, but I have no idea how to go about doing it. I would love to have or be able to make a necklace or bracelet with a charm or pendant that has the inscription, "Farmgirl is a condition of the heart". Does anyone know how we could make a charm like this or have one made? We could use our charms to make a bracelet or necklace and maybe swap them out. We used to do something similar in girl scouts at Christmas with homemade ornaments.
