Great! I've been looking at the definitions and it is a bit challenging. I need to know more than turn on, zoom and click.

I am so happy to have found this thread. I became a farmgirl sister a couple months back but haven't had time to get
anything accomplished yet. I think I will start back with an apron and try to get caught back up with the rest of ya.
This is just a fantstic site! Love all the info and friendship shared across the miles.

I would like to join in on this I think it is
a great idea... and I like the suggestion to start
with beginner and work our way up. those who have
been there done that can give ideas to those just
starting on a project.

If it isn't too late, I'd love to start the Sept shutterbug challenge too!
Is there a specific deadline or just Sept 30th?
I just LOVE this place!

Hi Sisters! Did any of you notice the photo contest in September's "Cluck," the Farmgirl Sisterhood newsletter? It would tie in perfectly with the beginner Shutterbugs badge.

Here's a link to it (6MB .pdf).

I'm going to dust off my camera this weekend!

Georgiaberry, I love the SimCam! Thanks for the link.

Wasn't that perfect timing, Hallie? I've been experimenting with my camera's different modes instead of choosing "Auto" every time. Maybe it's getting a bit better.

Sherri, Just do whatever you can towards your Shutterbug badges in September. We'll pick a new badge category in October.

I'm going to at least do the beginner things with this badge. I love my camera but I know nothing about it. are you going to post all the clucking about this badge here or start a new thread?

Looking forward to it!

I think we'll keep the clucking here. I've been playing around with the beginning badge. I've discovered that my camera has a close-up option that works really well when I'm taking pictures of my crafts. I've been so bad to only use the Auto feature. I also used the distant scenery mode to take pictures of some horses in a pasture. Next time I have the kids running around outside, I'm going to try out the sports mode. I am thinking more about my shot. My primary thought is symmetrical so it's been a challenge to use rule of thirds. They're right, it does look better. But the compulsive person I am, I still want to crop it so it's symmetrical. How is everyone doing with their badges? Hoping I can get it all together and posted beginner level before the end of the month.

Any ideas for October's badge?

Here is a look at "Homespun Christmas":

Beginner Level

Make at least 25% of your Christmas presents as well as 25% of the Christmas ornaments used in your home in a given calendar year.

Intermediate Level

Deliver and decorate a Christmas tree to someone that is unable to put one up on their own. Use at least 25% handmade (made by you) Christmas ornaments on the tree.

Expert Level

In a separate calendar year from above, decorate a full-size Christmas tree using the ornaments from your Beginner Level, but this time decorate the entire tree in your own hand-made ornaments. Make ALL the Christmas presents that you give.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I am game to try for beginner level - I was planning to make some handmade purse size calendars with my new bind-it-all machine as xmas gifts.

Everybody chime in - do you all want to try homespun christmas for october?

I think I will finish the shutter bug soon - just need to put my photos together in a flickr set or something so they will be a collection. That was fun and I learned a lot about my camera.

Well, I don't have many Christmas gifts to make and I'm already looking for Christmas projects to get into, so this is something I'm doing anyway.

Let's share our projects and ideas for this badge with each other here!!! Making Holiday things for your home and as gifts for friends and loved ones is so rewarding =) It's going to be a sewing challenge for me, but these will go on my bedroom tree, so I want them to be especially pretty! I am thinking of gifts as I type. So much fun!

I went out today and bought yarn for a cotton pillow that will look like a flag for one of my sons and a tree skirt for his frist Christmas tree. I will also make a few ornaments to go along with it.

Here's an idea for ornaments. I use a pointy instrument to make a hole and thread metallic thread through the hole. I just finished a couple dozen. I saw an old craft show where a lady had made a thousand of these with nothing but stars and white lights. Gorgeous!

Christy, Those are beautiful!!!!

Lets see, for starters, I'm going to make garlands out of yo-yo flowers that are sewn from mini print gingham fabric in green and white and I'm not sure what else yet for ornaments. Figuring that out this week.

Those stars are impressive!

Here is a link to some wonderful ornaments - designed by the children's book illustrator Jan Brett to be handmade by you.

http://www.janbrett.com/make_your_own_holiday_ornament.htm

I have made all of these - the heart is my favorite, and I made it out of card stock with contrasting wrapping paper glued on each piece, also with felt and did a blanket stitch around the edge. The heart makes a great gift tag if made from card stock or construction paper. We made the medallion as she instructed, but also out of brightly striped wrapping paper and it was very pretty - easy too! The kids like the bird the best, but they played them to death. What the birds need is glitter IMHO lol!

I am sure we will be making more of these this year - hope everyone enjoys the link!

I'm making a lot of my ornaments out of felt and/or fabric because of a certain cat in my house that like to climb the Christmas tree and knock off breakable glass ones...
and I'm kind of a stitchery nut anyway
Hopefully I'll get some thing done in time for Christmas...

Are you "Feeling" Christmas yet? It's been so sunny and warm here that I haven't even started, but I went and got some of the fabric that I needed. Gonna make my hunny some fleece slippers for his poor tired feet and a bunch of hearts, mittens and gingerbread men out of felt and hand embroidery them. Oh and I found this darling little bird ornament pattern in felt also...so in the evenings I'll be sewing up a storm!

Just seeing what ya'll have been up to, the thread is very quiet, so it must be mischief
