Are you going to take the plunge and try something new next year? This year, my new thing was having chickens and it was a wonderful if bumpy road to travel. Next year, I'm going to do some canning in earnest (I've only done jam here and there) and try sprouting all my garden produce inside before I plant. I'm also going to try fishing.
What new thing are you going to try in 2010?

I plan on putting in a garden and starting all my seeds indoors. I also plan on making several items and opening an etsy store.

Thank you Kimberly Ann! I may just take you up on teaching me to crochet. I have tried three times in the last 10 years and it has never ended well. Usually ends in a tantrum and ctochet hook and yarn flying across the room.

I am going to make lots more raised beds with plenty of mulch. The next big thing I am going to do is raise chickens to butcher and put in the freezer.

Melanie, if it would help, I could try videotaping myself doing a chain and basic stitches, if you want. I have viewed the ones on YouTube too and sometime those can be helpful. I know the diagrams in all the crochet books were always hard to figure out. Just let me know!

Kimberly, the other night I had such a hissy fit just trying to make a chain. My guy and I had been sitting in the bed watching tv. He looked at me like I had totally came off my rocker. I finally got past the chain and the basic stitches went easily. But how do I get the right tension(?) ? Right now it seems too tight and if I work the piece loosely it seems sloppy. Thank you.

Hi Melanie,
I would also like to learn how to can. I have a few challenges. I have a flat top stove, which means I had to find a camp stove that had enough btu's to can on, which I did. I had one bout with canning green beans last summer but I didn't get anything else done. I couldn't seem to find a rhythm. I was constantly behind the eight ball and it took way too long. I can remember canning with my mom and it seemed to go so smoothly. Plus with using a stove outside I have to use it when the weather will cooperate. I am going to give it a good try this next year. I love the smells and the process. I just need to find my groove. I think I need a step by step manual.

Melanie, I think tension is always an issue at first. I wind the working yarn around the pinky finger of my left hand (hook is in my right) to help give a little tension. Also, you can check your gauge when you start a project to see if you crochet tighter than the designer. I would recommend that for big projects at least. You can always go up a hook size if you need to to get the right gauge (or decrease too, if you need it). Granny squares might be a good project to practice your tension - they work up quickly. Also, as far as sloppy goes, don't forget that most crochet needs to be blocked when it is finished to give it the final shape. Blocking can make a huge difference in the finished piece. Happy Crocheting!!

I'd like to be more adventurous in my cooking. I'd like to make more of a variety of meals and get out of my comfort zone.

We started our flock of Romney sheep this year. They'll be sheared for the first time spring 2010. So I want to learn how to spin the wool. I've also been approached by friends to put in a u-pick pumpkin patch in part of my garden for their kids. So i'm considering this as a small side venture this year. My list for new things in 2010 seems to be a mile long but these ones are on the top.

Melanie, my mom taught me how to crochet when I was 9 years old. I was so bad at it. I got so tired of trying that I just gave up. Then I tried again and still no luck. And then finally I decided to try it again when I was 13 and now I love to crochet. It just takes time. You'll get it! Hugs, Channah

As if I don't have enough quilting and sewing projects on the calendar already, I'm seriously thinking about getting my mom to teach me how to crochet hairpin lace. It's so beautiful. she's made over 500 afghans and has won many ribbons at the fair. . .

I want to learn to spin, and I'm thinking about doing a blog or website. Other than that, I think I'm just going to work on being more organized, and having more time for my crafts this year. I'll be having my first booth in March -- to sell my handwoven and other items, and I'm a little nervous about having enough, so January through mid March I'll be weaving my little hands off!!!! Hey, Hosanna. What kind of loom do you have (the one that belonged to your grandmother)?

You sound like me. My boys use the floor in my craft room to play and then I have to crawl over them. It just doesn't make for a happy crafter.

Oh Karen, I wish you lived here by me! I'm looking for a buddy to join me at a goat rescue site helping out every once in a while. I love goats but figured I better learn more about them before I considered getting a mini one. Please keep us posted on your 2010 goals. :-) Hopefully you'll have some soap to sell.
