Farm Kitchen:  I Need Help!  |

Saturday I have several men coming to work on our water line outside. These are old biker friends of my hubby's. When I say old I mean old guys. Really. In their 50s and 60s. Well, that's not too old. But these are big guys. Like they like to eat. And my hubby is not going to be here. So I am going to have to feed these guys. And I won't have water, either. Except what I put up for the day. We do have well water but it's kind of cloudy right now.
Anyway, what would be something good to feed these guys while they are here? They are doing all the work for FREE and I know it will take all day so they will need food. And we aren't near a lot of fast food places way out here in the outback.
So any suggestions would be great. I have burger and some chicken breasts. I have all those steaks from Cowboy. Or just some sandwiches? I am at a loss as to what to fix them. I need help!!

Barbecue in the crockpot--got any extra roasts lying around? You could simply slow cook it all day, put in the sauce (or make your own--whatever you do), get some buns, some chips, make up some slaw (or buy some) and whamo! Instant man lunch. And, it's all doable ahead of time. Personally, I've never seen a man turn down pulled pork or beef barbecue.

Boy, if it were me I'd make a big ol' pot of chili and some bread and fill that chili with big chunks of beef! That ought to fix 'um up right! Or you could do steak sandwiches with some soup or chili. I like Really thick chili with cornbread too. Some hearty shepherd's pies are not too heard either.

Oh Jonni, great idea! I never even thought about BBQ. I just went to the freezer and I have 2 pork roast from my pigs last year! Yeah! I can get all the other stuff tomorrow. Thank you. You are great!

Annika, you must have posted right when I did! I was thinking chili, too. That does sound good and easy. I am all for easy. And I like not so many pots and dishes and all that stuff, too. So now it's a toss-up. I could do both. And they can both be frozen, too.
You farmgirls are the greatest when it comes to quick help! Thanks so much.

Annika's got a great idea, too...I read the words "men" and "work" and "big guys" and my gut went "BBQ"! Anything in one pot is key since you're not going to have access to water for clean up.

I was going to say BBQ!!! Maybe roast up some ears of corn (You can buy a huge bag in the frozen section). Add some baked beans with bacon and some easy corn bread muffins and that should fill 'em up!!! : )

I knew there was something else that went with BBQ. I was just writing out a list of things to get tomorrow and chips just didn't sound like enough. So I'll get corn and baked beans and have slaw, too. I think I will make chili, too. This could take all day. If my hubby's any indication as to how fast old guys can work, these guys will be here awhile. He works 5 minutes and has to take an hour break. One of the guys, Kid, came out yesterday and dug some around the faucet and he was huffin' and puffin'. This should be one interesting long day here on the farm! Oh, and a big ole chocolate cake for dessert.

I would Dutch oven cook some whole chickens and vegetables outside with Dutch oven rolls and a salad of some kind and then in another dutch oven a dump cake or cobbler with ice cream. I have four differant size dutch ovens for that sort of cooking event, 2 large, 1 medium and 1 smaller one. Or Beer can BBQ Chicken on the grill outside with a pasta salad and maybe some sort of twice baked potato on the grill. Something that is easy for you to cook and clean up. I also like the idea of the one pot dinner but it sounds like your going to need a big pot for those guys! ~Stacey

Stacey, come on over! That sounds great. But I already have the pork roasts in the oven now. From my pigs, too! And already made banana pudding and chocolate cake. I baked 2 pans of potatoes for potato salad. And boiled a bunch of eggs for deviled eggs. I'll make slaw tomorrow. And put the meat in the crock pot and add BBQ sauce and let that simmer all morning. I also have the baked beans all ready to pop in the oven, too. Making tea and have cokes. I will make biscuits and sausage in the morning and lots of coffee. So they should be well fed. These are pretty big guys. They should be alright with all this.
So I think I am all ready. I will have to help dig I guess. What fun. Not looking forward to that. But it has to be done. I need to turn off the water in a little bit.

Well, it's over. For now. We are going to have to do the rest of the water line though. They got all the line put in and turned the water back on and there was a big hole on the OTHER side. So they patched that, turned water back on and the new shut-off valve has a little tiny pin hole drizzle of water coming out. So they decided we'll have to go ahead and finish the whole line. So that's about 300' of pipe. We'll rent a digger this time. But I am happy with a little pin hole leak. I got the water bill today and it's $135.00. Man! So this is a drop in the bucket compared to what it's been doing.
The food was good. I always make way too much. But we can eat this again tomorrow. I like left overs. I sure wish ya'll had come on over. There was plenty.
But I am pooped and filthy. I need a shower bad.

| ok so I am a day late and dollar short as usual. I have done made rights (sloppy joes) it goes great in a slow cooker and you can do from scratch or canned. My by scratch is whatever my 1968 Betty Crocker says and/or whatever I have that is close to it. I stole my moms BC cookbook. I think she got it for a wedding gift. Hope it went good!!! Sorry to hear about your water problems that just isnt any fun. |
