Hi Jan, this is Kim from Wisconsin, a lover of Jersey cows! We don't have one at the moment but are looking to get one soon I had back surgery a few years ago and that put me off large critters for awhile. I love goats too. We had a milking herd of 45 at one time. Our boys were young when we did this and just loved it. They still love goats and love to come home to see them. We have two Oberhaslis. My sons are 28, 26, 25. I have a grandson , Avery, and a granddaughter, Fiona who are a blast! There are many Jersey farms here and I love to see them out in the fields. Do you make butter? Cheese? Although I don't keep a cow at this time, my husband Kevin gets milk from a farm for me to play with. We have been together 30 yrs and it's nice to hear you say that you're with the love of your life cause that's how I feel, too. Tell me more about yourself-this is a great site and the people here are so sweet!Looking forward to hearing from you, Kim

Good Morning, Jan!

So glad you 'stumbled' across us. Actually, I think all the gals that arrive here are destined to do so. This place is a haven for farmgirls of all ages and types. You'll love it here.

Do tell more about your farm life.....we love the stories!

Thank you so much for the warm welcome. Jenny I am the same JanO for the KFC forum. How's Norman doing in his new home?

Julia I'm in a little town called Toledo. It's about 25 miles S. of Chehalis and N. of Kelso, and east of Winlock. We moved up here last summer from S. Calif. I bought the Nubians shortly after we moved here. At the time my husband taveled a lot and it was hard on the kids being in a new place and then dealing with their dad being gone. So I bought them each a baby goat. My 16 yo DD got a doe named Bonnie and my son, 14 yo, got a buck that he calls Clyde. They are a lot of fun, but boy are they a pain sometimes because they're such big pets.

The cows are actually my endevor. I grew up on a horse & cattle ranch and always wanted to get back into that lifestyle again. So when we moved I told my hubby that I was going to have a cow, period! He really wasn't too sure about it, but he's come around. I picked up my heifer Julie last summer as a feeder calf. She's going to be bred this year for her first calf next spring. My other cow I got in January. She's an older cow who was suppose to be bred for a summer calf, but I'm doubting that now. I'm waiting on a blood test to come back to confirm it, not holding out much home though. She was running with a bull before I got her so if she's not pregnant I'm more concerned about "why". So her future is kind of up in the air for us right now. I do make butter though, and can't wait to make cheese and all the other by-products.

The horse, Missy, my DH brought home from a guy he works with. She was a pasture ornament for a long time and he thought she would be a good project for me. (Yea, like I have time for another project.) I'll give it a shot though.

We are pretty much building from the ground up. All we had when we got here was a house and 10 acres of "brush". Last summer we cleared 5 acres, had the barn built, and put up some temporary fencing for Julie & the goats. This year we need to get the permanent fences up and hope to clear the other 5 acres. Somewhere in there I need to build a chicken coop(have hens sleeping with the goats), build covered hay storage for next years supply, and a whole list of other "priority" projects.

Gosh, I love farm life! LOL

Norman is doing great in his new home and things are going smooth with milking Mona. I wish my mom would have bought me a baby goat when I was a teenager..I would have been thrilled!! My mom was for sure NOT the animal loving type (she always has just one dog) but grew up on a dairy farm. She bought my Mona for me for Christmas (early) though, so she does understand that I am not going to grow out of my love for farm animals..I guess after I turned 47 she gave up..haha
I am so glad you were here..I look forward to hearing about your projects..and what the blood test says about your cow too (Is it Nettie?)
