I have been doing some reading about elderberry extract being good for the immune system. Also, using it if you have the cold or flu to get through it quicker.
Do you know anything about this, have you every used it. I have not found anyone who has used this and found it successful. It is expensive to buy the extract, but found myself purchasing some to have on hand. Especially during the cold and flu season. We do not get flu shots and so I like to find natural remedies.
Thanks,
Sheri

I know many including my mom and nephew who use it with great success.

I think there is a few things to keep in mind.

1. Fresh
2. Local

I think like honey it's best to get local for what ever allergies that you have that are local.

Either way though, even though it's expensive you don't need a lot, you only add a little to water or such each day. And I think it's yummy! hahaha I even had elderberry wine at my wedding! :)

We have been canning it for a long time. Been using it to help with colds for a few years. In my opinion it really does make a big difference on the severity and length of the cold. Now we have been drinking it alot, to hopefully avoid the H1N1.

I was just going to post a link to Michele's post :)

Sheri, I made some Elderberry Syrup a couple of weeks ago and have been faithfully taking it. I just got over the Flu and it didn't last as long as it usually does and was not as severe. Here's a link to the recipe:

http://www.thefamilyhomestead.com/herbsrecipescommoncold.htm

I used dried elderberries from Mountain Rose Herbs. One batch made 3 four ounce bottles. The one thing I would consider doing different is to use Agave nectar instead of honey and probably only one cup. The honey taste is very strong.

However, I don't know a whole lot about Agave, BUT, honey is a natural antibiotic, so you may want to keep it in there for it's natural healing abilities!

I have been making my own herbal tinctures for years and it's quite easy to do. Mine are alcohol based (which in my opinion are the best, they are stronger). Just this morning, I put my home-grown organic echinacea on to "brew" for a couple of weeks. Buying tinctures is expensive! The only thing about making your own is you have to play around with the dosage. For people that can't tolerate the alcohol, you can simply "burn" off the alcohol. I've heard many good results using elderberries, although I haven't used it myself. I've read the flowers are better than the berry itself.

Black elderberries tend to have better healing properties and the syrup works better for a cough than anything else i've used
