One thing my grandmother taught me was the value of airing the house out even in winter. So when I change the sheets and flip the mattress I open the window and then close the door and do some other chores for half an hour. The fresh air helps with stale air and even germs. ~Beth~

I agree totally the few minutes that the clean air circulates makes the whole room smell great too.

I just did this today. I do it as often as I can, even if it is only for 5 minutes in the morning. I LOVE fresh air and clean smelling home.

I agree! I am so glad you brought this up, especially coming into winter where almost everyone bottles of their house pretty tight!

You know, even as a child in minnesota in the midst of cold winter my mother did this as well. It always made the house feel fresher

You know that just made me think of staying at my grandmas in the wintertime. All of us cousins would be sleeping on piles of blankets in the livingroom where the stove was, and grandma would inevitable wake us up to a wide open front door and a rush of bitter wind, then the smell of woodsmoke as she stoked up the morning fire. Lots of times she would keep wood inside for that first round but sometimes she didnt or would have used it up during the night if it was really cold. We would put our heads under the blankets and complain. My grandma now has natural gas heat and there is a sad hole where her woodstove should be. :(

Does anyone vaccuum the mattress, too? I have always done that for the dust mites and all the little critters that like to live in mattresses. I feel so much better with clean sheets and a clean bed.

I have never vacuumed it, I do spritz it lightly with a few drops of lavendar oil and water and air it out thoroughly. We keep our mattresses in the hypoallergenic mattress covers and I worry about mildew a little since its so humid here, not that Ive actually noticed anything like that. I might try that though, since the thought of dust mites freaks me out a little and I vacuum every day. (3 dogs and 4 cats). My mattresses stay uncovered for the full day of Sunday while I wash bedding and hang it out.

My Great-Grandma use to open the windows like that to air the place out too. Thanks for clearing the cobwebs&dust offa that one: )
Now I know where I get my idea of,"Leaving the windows open a crack til the 1st snow." My mom slept that way too when she was younger. She still leaves her feet out from under the covers all year round. Aren't people funny. It's the little quirks that make us the"lovable sisters that we are."

I was in the hospital once for a long time, and they didn't have windows you could open, I felt so sick from that! And soooo claustrophobic. I hated it! I have to have the windows open regularly too!

Big believer here! I open windows all the time. And always have my bedroom window opened at night. Even if its really really cold out, then just a few inches, but opened.

I have to sleep in a cool room if I am to get good sleep. Remember the Night Before Christmas and 'And mamma in her 'kerchief, and I in my cap'? I still wear a night cap because heat leaves the head when one is warm, and I want to stay warm, but breathe cool or cold air.

Both my Dads Scottish side and my Moms Scandinavian side has always bundled the baby up and placed in a cover pram on the screen enclosed or secure back deck within sight, to sleep.

Fresh air is so healthy and with flu and cold seasons we have found that old fashioned living, with healthy whole foods, fresh clean water, getting enough sleep, and getting plenty of fresh air does indeed make one healthier overall. ~Beth~

One of the apartments I lived in had a fan that would turn on automatically at night because with the new construction being so tight there were concerns that not enough fresh air came into the house! That was surprising to me but really made me think! I have been cleaning a lot the past couple days, hoping that this winter when the heater runs a bit mroe it will be blowing cleaner air and with opening the windows every couple of days we will keep the out gassing build up to a minimum.

Absolutely! I sleep with the bedroom window cracked, even in wintertime. And with a houseful of animals and people, I open up and air out as often as the weather will allow. I have to say that we rarely get sick here!
