Does anyone use this?
I have been considering buying some (or making it if I can find a recipe).
I was wondering:
~How effective is it ? ~Is it something that you should use daily or when starting to feel under the weather? ~Does anyone have a recipe? ![](icons/icon_smile.gif)
Thanks girls :)

My Windy Pines cousin Michele makes her own elderberry juice/syrup and has sent it down here for us. It works wonderfully and I highly recommend it. Whenever someone is catching a cold in the house we all start drinking it. I like it in my iced tea. It helps considerably and you can buy elderberry cough drops too. Riccola makes them and they are really reasonably priced and work great!
Hopefully Michele will see this and give you her recipe. Elderberry has many benefits too it, check it out on the internet.

I use it before 'bug' season. I use a tincure that I get at Fred Meyer in the health section. I have been less sick since I used it. If I do get a bit of the bug, it doesn't last as long nor does it get as severe. I wish I had access to the berries as I would love to make my own.

I pick fresh elderberries, and juice them. I put then in a large canner, and add water, and simmer till they loose their color. Then can up the juice. Not sure about using dried berries. We either drink the juice, warmed up with honey, or I mix it with kool aid. It is really sour without some kind of sweetner. I swear by drinking this as it really does make a difference. Start drinking it when you fist think you are coming down with a cold. It either helps you avoid getting sick, or really shortens the time and severity of the cold. At least for us it has. My husband loves sun tea, and he mixes juice in with that. Good luck Michele |

Best of luck with your dried elderberries. The website is intersting. It is always fun to find a new recipe. It is great that you can use dried berries as well.

I made the syrup yesterday and it was very easy to make. It does have a strong honey taste but I think it's going to work well. From one batch I made 3 four ounce bottles. :) Thanks ladies for your input :)

Sharon did you order the elderberries online? I have emailed my local gardernshop about elderberries growing in Denver. I might like to grow my own. The store bought syruip is yummy, but I can see that it will be gone fast with three of us using it. |

Sharon,
I dont know if you have a Vitamin Cottage near you . but there price is really good. I bought a few bags and ground the first batch in the blender to make its powerdery first so I could get a lot of flavor out of the berry. It seems super concentrated even though I used more water. Once its boiled down, I think I may add some blackberries for additional flavor and then can it. |

Sharon, we use elderberry syrup also when we first feel we are getting sick and it is great!! There are lots of wild elderberry trees around up here, but alas, I haven't had the time to go pick them and make my own syrup yet. I hope to some day.

My mom and I gather elderberries and can them by filling the jar with apple juice. When someone starts to feel or is sick they drink the juice. Works great.

Thanks for the link Terri. Those are some really low prices for elderberry products! The best price I found in a store by me is Walgreens, when the syrup is on sale it was $9.99. At Whole Foods they want around $17 for the same sized bottle and product.
