| I am taking swimming lessons (sounds silly at my age) two days a week and am supposed to practice other days. My hair is getting all dried out. . .my question is this, do those swim caps keep your hair dry? or just out of your face. I'm wondering if I should be using one! |

When my sisters were little and did swim teams they would put conditioner on their dry hair under their swim caps. When they were done the pools always had one of those showers and they would rinse it out. I'm not sure if that is ok or not to do in case a little of the conditioner was to get in the pool. This was 25 years ago, I'm sure somebody has a better idea now days! Good Luck!

The swim caps will keep your hair dryer not 100% but drier, I hate them because they are hard to put on and I think they hurt. I haven't used one since I retired 3 years ago. I used to just put conditioner in my hair and keep it in a little longer than needed. Rinse with vinegar also.
I don't know your age but learning to swin at any age is a great thing. It's a good excerise and lots of fun. I do miss swimming.

Sheila, I trained for a triathalon last year and wore a swim cap while swimming laps. It DID NOT keep my hair dry at all. Now, it did keep my hair out of my face which was great, but it didn't keep my hair dry in any way. Maybe I didn't wear the right kind, though it was made of rubber. I would suggest using some heavy, duty conditioner or doing a hot oil or mayonaise treatement once a week. That helped my hair tremendously.

Yup I use the special shampoo.
And my hair (when it was about 4 feet long!) never got wet!
The thing is you can't go cheap on swim caps!
I paid a long time ago around 25 dollars-those cheap 5 dollar things are useless. It was silicone. And I bought it at a "swim" store. They sold every thing around people on swim teams, water sports only. So they had really high quality stuff.
My hair is weird, if it gets chlorine in it, even after washing with shampoo etc, it will be gummy (as if it literally has gum all in it) for a week! And I can not even try to comb it! So I had to get something that really worked. As I was swimming at the Y. If I swim in a lake, or my families pools (they don't use chlorine, they use a ozonator), then my hair doesn't get gummy like that.

| I used to swim 6-7 hours a week and I kept my hair nice by getting it wet in the shower and putting conditioner is in and pinnig it up. I guess I should say I did aquacise and didnt go under the water. If you were going to do that, I would wear a good cap and still use conditioner. |

I used to also be on a swim team and swam just about every day in college. It was nice having a pool 100 paces outside the dorm. I'd even go inthe winter...same regimine.
Hair was always dried out
Used UltraSwim to get chlorine out
These days Albrey Organics also makes a nice anti chlorine/sea water shampoo and separate conditioner
And there are swim caps made out of sillicone which slides over dry hair a little easier
And no, caps aren't designed to keep hair dry. They are supposed to reduce drag in the water |

Wow, I never knew that caps were only for glide in the water. Makes sense though. I have been aquacising in the U pool here since March and really want to learn to swim (yes, this old lady knows how but has a fear from near drowning). I too have been thinking about getting a cap, so thanks everyone for the advice. And thanks for letting me know that Albrey Organics has a special soap for the chlorine, Anna! I must get some. P. S.
