OK, so a few years ago when I thought a major clean out was a good idea,{NOT] I must have let my wooden spoons go. Do you think if I bought a new one I could darken it with a tea stain?

I would think you could if you wanted it only for decorative reasons, but I would be worried about the strong tea stain leaving a flavor in other foods. I don't know that this is true, it's just my instinct.

Why would you want to darken them?? It doesn't take long for them to develop a natural patina all their own.

That said - there is no reason not to use a tea dye to darken them.

Don't want to wait, I have a big bowl of potpouri and I keep the spoon in there and stir it up often to release the scent, so it would just look better if it were darker.

I'd make a few pots real dark coffee.......pour them in the sink and drop your spoons in Let them soak for awhile and then wash them by hand with some hot soapy water. Depending on how dark you want them....either keep them in the sink longer....or just do it again. ;o)

You might just check out an antique mall. Around here, you can get nice wooden spoons that are heavy and have stood the test of time in someone's kitchen for just a couple of dollars. And it certainly looks used! I like the fact that they're made of good woods like olive wood and generally have thicker, shaped handles, not the dowel-like sticks available today at the box stores. They're beautiful.

I got one not too long ago that had a nice round, deep bowl. I loved the fact that it'd stirred so many pots that the end was dubbed! I think it was two or three dollars. Perhaps it was more than a Walmart spoon, but it was less than a Williams-Sonoma spoon, and had survived the test of time.

Also, if you are a flea market shopper, you can find vintage wooden utensils, and clean them thoroughly. I just got some new ones because my old, old ones were looking too dark and stained....I wish I had known you wanted some! I may still have one around here somewhere......

all of the above are great ideas .. i collect wooden spoons .. think of a wooden 'scoop' for your potpourii too .. xoxo

a cute idea if you have any of those smaller wooden barrels .. is to put an olde wooden bowl on top of it (as the lid) .. then fill it with pot pourii (or fruit .. i'm going to fill one with my passion .. pistachio nuts!!!) with a spoon or scoop! xo

They were hard maple and MADE IN THE USA!!!
I was so happy I had to by a set!
I bought a slotted spoon, reg spoon and 3 spatulas, very well made and I feel worth every penny I spent!

It's a locally owned store here in Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin.
There wasn't any info on who makes them.

One of my favorite utensils is a nickel scoop/oak handled ice cream scoop that I found in North Carolina in the 70's. I got it for $8.00, and I still have it in my kitchen just for the loveliness of it. And it dips a mean scoop of ice cream, too.

I found two spoons that are old and darkened...do you want them Nancy Jo?

Just was reading over some of your old posts, one of them was when you and your daughter were making caprie pants. I remember years ago, I used to order clothes from the WARDS catalog, anyway I wrote out the order and one of the items was for 2 pair of peddle pushers, well my Grandpa who was about to write out the check for the order and was looking it over said, Nancy Jo, I don't think you need 2 new pair of peddle pushers, you have a whole closet full of shoes.

Nancy Jo, that is hilarious! He would have really been confused if you had called them clam diggers. Remember that name, too?

You can email me from this site, but my computer will not let me email you. So, let me know your address that way, and I will send along the spoons! Anything you want to trade is okay by me, I am happy just letting you have the spoons! :)

Glad you got your spoons! I sent you an email, too. My new set is from Pampered chef and I am really enjoying them. I think they are bamboo. Anyway, they are nice to use.

Peace

Bamboo is such an interesting material. I recently got a cutting board from Linens n Things made out of bamboo. I really like it; it's tough, and was a lot less expensive than a hardwood one. I love the way people are coming up with uses for some of these different materials. I also bought a set of bedsheets made out of WOOD. Aspen, I believe. They're so soft! I love them!
