i just blogged about this topic and thought it would be a good topic for the farm gals...
i'm sure some of you feel the same way i do about this. many of the things we do in our country lives serve multiple purposes.... like hanging clothes on the line, for example. it saves money, it's green, and frankly, i just enjoy it more because it gives me an excuse to get outside!
but i think many of the conveniences we take away from our daily lives also keeps us humble. i know i appreciate the few conveniences i have MORE after i've taken a few away. i don't like to be too convenient, i like to be different, it just keeps me in check.
my grandma and i got into it over this subject... it just blew her mind that we didn't have a microwave (or a dishwasher, or satellite tv, or that we use a clothesline, etc.). she huffed and puffed every morning because she couldn't warm her coffee up in a microwave, had to do it on the stovetop. now, this woman experienced living in the wilderness of alaska in a tent for crying out loud when she was first married! she lost every inconvenience possible. granted, she didn't like it at the time, but i would have thought she would have learned something from the experience. i can see how she believes she's lived without conveniences throughout some of her life and thinks she deserves to have them all now. but she doesn't seem to appreciate them at all... she just wants, wants, wants!
DH and i purposely take away things we don't "need." now, we could easily have all those things we've taken away. but i don't think my life would be half as rich with those conveniences.
what do you ladies think? what do you do everyday that keeps you humble and appreciative?
now, if you'll excuse me, i have to go hang my laundry on the line...

What keeps me humble?
The fact that if one minute of my life would have gone another way, I might not have met my husband nor have the children that I do. The fact that in a blink of an eye your life can change forever. The fact that we have no control over mother nature....
Wow, I'm getting too deep here for this early in the day...think I'll go have some tea. Thank you for posting this question...gave me something to think about.

What a great discussion Elizabeth~ For me it is meeting other farmgirls. I am always so in awe of the amount of talent that we farmgirls have. I dont think that any fancy New York designer or some fu-fu chef have ANYTHING on us. I think the more we are in community, the more "grounded" we become. Recently at one of our farmgirl chapter meetings as we were going around the room we realized that just in our group, we would never have to "purchase" from a store if we didnt want to, or couldnt afford to. We could just buy and barter our way through life with the support of one another.... I am humbled daily by the vast talent that is the farmgirls.

I feel humbled when I think of how God has blessed me with the people I've met in this life. Even those who have hurt me. ^^

I wholeheartly echo what Debbie just said.
I'll forever be humbled by the fact that my life was headed in a very wrong direction many years ago.
The good Lord knew my heart's desire, and honestly, after a very heartfelt and painful prayer one morning, it all took a turn for the better.
That better led me back to the East coast, back to my family, and right to the place where I will forever call home now. This also includes meeting my husband who is truly a Godsend.
I sometimes lie awake thinking about all the what ifs and what potentially "could" have happened. Thank GOD for my faith, family and true grit that kept me alive a fighting. (I married a very bad person who was verbally and physically abusive. I stopped cowering and started fighting back. I knew it was over that moring I prayed and begged for God to take me back home, somehow, some way.)
I also know others were praying for my safety. They knew it was a very bad situation
There's NOTHING more humbling than having prayer answered in a VERY powerful way.

I am humbled by the sheer fact that I keep getting blessed, even if I don't see it as that at first.

I have been humbled many times and I am so thankful. God has always seemed to know when I was getting to prideful and somehow someway he would prick my heart and I have always come back down to earth. Although a few times I'm sure I was fighting and kicking all the way. I'm am so thankful the Lord always knows what I need when I need it. Speaking of material things of being humbled of, I am no longer using a dishwasher. I have had a clothes line, that is until my son decided he needed the wood. So it was then I realized how much I loved my clothes line! So once again I was humbled. Blessings,Karen

I have been humbled since my confirmation and baptism. I was in an all time low at the time.Mom had passed away, my oldest brother 4 months later. Brother F. was out of the picture. I had just moved here AND been taking care of my mom for at least 5 years prior to her death. SO much had happened in a relatively short time. TOO much to be honest. Too much to come to terms with. Then I came to live here, went to church and it felt good.
NO it didn't happen overnight. I am still struggling daily. Still wishing SO many things never happened or went the other way. Still dreaming about a better life for myself and my brother . But I am learning, I am trying to put it behind me. One step forward two steps back often .
And the third blessing (second was meeting friend A :) ) was coming here. All the farmgirls, I feel like we are sisters at heart. Eventhough we may be thousands of miles away, but still feel when I feel down and out (or happy for that matter) I can just come here, ask for prayers, vent or post a happy post, it is being read, prayed about, and laughed. We all share the same dreams and ideas. We might never meet, but we still care about eachother.
And THAT my friends is a blessing and it keeps me humble.
Hugs from Marian/Dutchy, a farmgirl from the Netherlands :)

what keeps me humble?
when I see somebody struggling with an illness or cancer.
thinking of the men & women serving our country in the middle east.
knowing that my time with my 90yr.old grandmother is short.
my faith and having a sister and good friends who keep me in check if I'm feeling sorry for myself.
