so, i'd gone to the doctor back in march regarding a discoloration i'd noticed on my forehead. i wanted to rule out anything that could be bad, such as skin cancer or something. she told me it was probably caused from taking birth control pills due to the hormones. and it was nothing to worry about. i was relieved. she said there was nothing i could really do about it and it might go away if i went off the pill.

so i went on my way and a couple days later my hubby noticed i was getting the same discoloration on my upper lip! so i looked up some information on "webmd." i found out it was called melasma and was indeed caused from my birth control pills. what my doctor hadn't told me is melasma is caused from an interaction between the pill and being in the sun! the discoloration on my lip had come about because i'd been out in the sun all day! so i stopped taking the pill right then and there... i read it will only go away if you stop taking the pill and take heavy precautions to protect yourself from the sunlight.

melasma is also known as the "pregnancy mask" caused by the hormonal changes that take place during pregnancy.

i've been off the pill since then and have used sunscreen liberally and been careful in the sun. i have noticed my discolorations have gotten lighter. but it's taking so long to get rid of! so i wondered if any of you had found something that speeds up the process... i think it's a fairly common condition, especially in pregnant women. does anyone have any advice?

I have a friend that had that. Her complete face was covered with melasma after she had her son. I haven't seen her in a while, so I don't know if it faded. Does this go away, or fade?

it's supposed to... from what i read (regarding birth control pills) you stop taking the pill, take heavy precautions with the sun, and it should fade over time. i'm not sure how fast it will fade from pregnancy.... i've heard there are lightening creams, too, but i don't really want to try something like that.

Look up Spectrapeel VRM III laser for melasma treatment, on the internet and see what you think.

I don't suffer from stress. I'm a carrier.
