I have passion flower growing like crazy all over the place and I'd like to dry it to make tea, but I am totally lost as to how to go about it! Can any of you herbalists help me? I'm pretty dense, so I'd need really detailed instructions. And I'd love to share with anyone interested.

I don't know anything about the tea but I do have a question for you. I just planted mine this year and it is growing very well. No flowers yet. Do I cut it back in the fall or just leave it alone? I had one a couple years ago and it died. I really want this one to make it. Thanks

Um, Laura, I don't know exactly. I didn't plant mine, it's native and just started coming up. All over the place! They produce these seed pods that are egg shaped and I just leave them alone and they shrivel up and fall and new vines pop up in that area the next summer. When the vine dies back, I cut it back at the ground. But I think they send out extensive roots and babies come up from the roots, too. They come up in the yard and the hubs cuts them back and they're right back within a week. Kentucky shouldn't be too far north that it wouldn't do well, I don't think. But they're really medicinal plants. Even the seed pod is edible. I'm asking about the leaves because a tea from them is supposed to aid with insomnia, but I don't know how to safely dry them and prepare them.

You did thanks. I noticed on the back road to my mechanics place that they are all along there growing wild. Then the next time they mowed them all down. So they must do good here. I guess it will just take until next year to see. These I started with just the bare root. The ones last year I bought as a full grown plant at a nursery so I guess it will be a good experiment. I need to read up more on them cuz it sounds like you can do lots of things with all of the plant. Thanks for the help,

It depends on what you want to use it for. Medicinally, you can use the entire plant, the flowers, stems, leaves and shoots good up to about 6 inches). I find that herbs retain their color if you put them in a paper bag and then dry them, even in a hot car.
The pods, are delicious and are great for drinks, jams, syrups etc.

Bernadine, I want a tea for insomnia mostly. And how do you use the pods? They really are very succulent looking! But I haven't quite brought myself to just biting into one! LOL! Any instructions/recipes you have are greatly appreciated!

What lovely flowers. They are so interesting. We have a guzillion. I hate to think someone actually paid to get them. They will be everywhere in a year or so!
