It is a perrenial and will come back every year. Some people put a tomato cage upside down over it to keep the cat out of it. Sometimes cats can completely distroy the plants. It makes a very relaxing, tasty tea.

Kristine, My cat stays indoors. I bring some inside for him. How should I dry it? I am thinking of making little cat toys for some of my "feline lover", friends for Christmas gifts! Lucy
You can either air dry it, or, use a dehydrator. I have two catnip plants one for my cat to have fresh whenever he wishes, the other is in the garden and I harvest from it for my feline treats ( catnip mice)
One good hint, pick your catnip right after the dew has dried on the leaves and before the heat of the day. It will be at it's most potent state then.
