Several years ago a co-worker gave me a cloth bag with white beans in it . . told me to use as "heating pad". I put it away for a long time and then, at some point in time started using it on sore, aching muscles in my back and neck. WOW!!!! I used it so much I finally had to throw it out ("wore out" the beans). But I made a new one . . . I LOVE IT!!!! In my work as a caregiver for a person with a brain injury . . and outside work there are many times when I need that relief! Heat it in the microwave and apply!! Works wonders!!!!

A real good preventative for sore muscles is the homeopathic tablets of Arnica Montana - You take them before you work or work-out and it really does help prevent the soreness in the first place. A gal at our local health food store told me about this several years ago and so I tried it - it really does help.
I have also used rice or buckwheat hulls when making the microwave heating pacs. I add a little bit of lavender buds and a few drops of essential oil to the mix before bagging it and it smells wonderful when heated and aids in the relaxation. I make a little removable cover that can be washed. It makes a great gift.
Blessings, Sheri

I have added dried mint to the bags too (mine are rice) and it is really soothing. Lavender sounds heavenly.

I received a rice bag from a friend a few years ago (right after a car accident) I would have to say that it has been the BEST gift I have ever received :)

Thanks for your other hints, too, farmgirls!! I remember that I helped my daughter make one for her hubby to use. He is a triathlete and has a variety of aches and pains after his races. He really likes it . . . and he has used mine when visiting here. Yup . . . great gift!!!

I have a rice one, love it! Made a long one to wrap all the way around your neck comfortably, another one is smaller with a velcro strap to secure in areas like an aching knee or elbow. My only problem is, in our new home we do not have a microwave. So heating it is done in the oven or on the wood stove.
Question: Some of you use beans or corn. . . do they last as long as the rice?

Joanna, I used great white northern beans in the one I made . . . seems to do really well. I think the same kind of beans were used in the one that was given to me that I wore out. I've used a rice one but it's not mine so I don't know how long it has lasted. CJ

Thanks CJ! I have only used rice, it lasted for close to 4 years before I retired it for a new one. Figured they all hold the heat about the same, so maybe they last about as long. . . depending on use I guess.
If the beans were not so expensive I would give them a try. . . maybe next year I will grow a crop just for a new neck warmer!!

Mine had field corn in it and it lasted about 3 years before it started smelling like I burned popcorn. Can you tell, I used it ALL the time! Between neck, back, shoulder and hip injuries I couldn't get enough :)
Once I learn how to sew, I am thinking about making one so it will rest on my back but then come up over the shoulder (sort of bib shaped worn backwards) and I think channels in it would work best for distributing the weight.

Something for the entire back WOULD be nice . . . I usually have to move mine from neck and shoulders to lower back. Perhaps I'll think about something different too. Once the BUSY, BUSY summer-harvest season is over I may try to make one. Sharon, if I do, I'll let you know. CJ

They are great in the winter too! I like to heat them up and place them at the foot of the bed under the blankets before bedtime :)

i've used these at other people's house, and my best friend made me a lovely rice bag.... BUT i don't have a microwave. any suggestions for other "heating pad" types of things that don't require a microwave?

Hi girls...you are right...the bean/rice/whatever bags are great heated...I have, for years, used them straight from the freezer for all of the same purposes...women in labor love them when I put them on their back...aloha!!

We love our rice and bean bags here, and we've always used the microwave to heat it up (as long as we still have one)...but I never thought of using the woodstove to heat it up! Will have to try that next time!!
If we have sore aching muscles here, something else we do is use peppermint essential oils. Nothin' like a muscle rub with peppermint oil. :)

Oh Calico, what a great idea. I hate those cold sheets in winter!

Well . . . I use my bag almost every night, most espcially on my neck and upper shoulders. Sure makes a difference.
And, I'm off to heat mine up right now and apply it . . . AHHHHHHH! CJ

These "heating bags" are a great idea! Thank you sharing. I have arthritis and bone spurs in one knee and I am going to try this:) Blessings,

CJ....I make long neck rolls with flax seed, lavender and lavender essential oil. The flax seed is fine and so it contours nicely--not lumpy at all. I use muslin and then make a "pillow" case with red pillow ticking and then I track down a crochet doily and stitch that on...dresses it up a little!
I have a photo on my blog if you would like to check it out...
Flax seed will retain the heat 3X longer than rice or beans and it doesn't dry out because of the flax seed oil.
