DId any one else see this? There are horse thieves in South Florida who are stealing horses to sell their meat on the black market. They steal people's pets and butcher them and leave the carcass there. They used to hang horse thieves in the old days, and while I'm not about to advocate hanging anyone, I hope they find these thieves and throw them in jail and let them rot. Horses are too beautiful and noble to be slaughtered for food, except in places like Mongolia where the horses provide meat, milk, and hides for the nomads. It's just the idea of stealing someone's pet horse and butchering it for money...you can imagine the outcry if it was cats or dogs being butchered. I just hope they break up this ring of horse thieves and prosecute them to the fullest extent of the law.

If they are butchering on the spot , and leaving the carcesses, they may not be selling on the black market, they may be feeding themselves and their families. It is happening in alot of rural areas, cattle, hogs, poultry and yes horses. If you are starving, you will do what you have to, in order to feed your family. I'm certainly not saying its right, and if someone came to my door and asked, I could not turn them down, I could not turn down anyone that is hungry or cold, especialy children. So this may be whats going on in Florida.

That is a sad story. Stealing is just not right. But, as Teresa said the people may be hungary. To me there would be other ways to get food.

The police are pretty sure it's for the black market--horse meat brings twenty-five to forty dollars per pound. I know people are hungry but there are food pantries where they can get food for free. Belgium and France are the two main countries where horse meat is considered to be gourmet fare. I just think it's sick to kill people's companion animals for food.

it has been happening in several southwestern states, mostly illegals, its wrong and very sad, i guess these people are just afraid, and in their eyes if its running free (free range or something simular) its ok.

Yes I have read that! I guess horse meat is a big part of some cultures. I think they mentioned Puerto Rico? I could be wrong so please don't quote me. I saw some pretty gruesome pictures of the horses being slaughtered in their pens and stalls. I can't imagine going out in the morning to feed and finding that. So very very sad.

Not Puerto Rico. Pork and Cod fish is our choice of meat. No dogs or cats either. But I did ask my husband (who is in law enforcement to call his cousin, also in law enforcement in FL) about this story. He was actually told the belief has always been the animals, horses are not the only ones they've found are being used to feed the huge amount of wild animals that are housed in the game reserves all over FL. Those animals consume a huge amount of raw meat daily and in a bad economy they will get the meat anywhere they can, legal and illegal.

You are right, sorry I messed up the country! The article that I had read said it is a delicacy for "natives of the Caribean, Cuba, and Europe." And of course the article could be using faulty information of course:

I doubt that the bad guys are butchering the horses because they are hungry. Before they do that, they will steal money to go to McDonalds. Butchering is hard work. I would believe black market before hunger. I have tried to give fresh stuff from the garden to "poor" people. They won't cook it. They would rather have money to do fast food. Yes, drive through in a car that uses more gas than the food is worth.

That is sad, especially because it is someones pet. And yes, the French do eat horse meat. My dad tried it when he was in the military, said it wasnt that good, and he really couldnt get past the idea of eating a horse. So sad for the owners.

Another one today. I'm horrified, and I actually sent an email to the Miami Dade County police--it CAN be stopped, and it should. The most recent one, they left the (alive) foal lying beside it's dead mother. I grew up with horses, and I am outraged...absolutely outraged.

I too am horrified at the thought of going out and finding my horse has been slaughtered. If this meat is being sold on the black market then it must be very profitable. One way to defuse that is to lift the ban on slaughtering horses commercially. Yes, some horses should be and could be slaughtered. It would sure bring down the price on the balck market. Not that I like the idea nor would I eat horse meat, there are some things that need to be done. Don't get me wrong, I love horses. I traded mine in years ago for a motorcycle. At least the motorcycle didn't eat but only when I rode it.
