I am using homemade laundry detergent (Aunt Jenny's recipe). We have hard well water. How do you ladies get your whites white? I don't want to put bleach in my septic system, besides I hate bleach. But I don't know what else to do. Also, it seems as if my hubbies work clothes aren't getting clean. Do you know of any tips or tricks?

Baking Soda like Teresa mentioned really helps- 4-8 pounds to your recipe per box of borax. Baking Soda softens water. Also wash your whites in your hottest water since borax helps whitens. Another trick if you line dry is to put lemon juice in your rinse water and then hang dry on sunny days- Natural bleach! One last trick is to use vinegar in the rinse to make sure any residue is washed away.
How much soap are you putting in your mix? If you have very dirty clothes you might want to up the percentage amount of powered, shaved soap, etc that you make your mix with.

Thanks for the tips. I'll try adding more baking soda to my next recipe! I already use borax and vinegar.

Erin: When I first started with the MJF site, someone had asked that question. Then, Alee, had mentioned exactly what she mentioned to you. I tried it. My whites or white!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I call Alee the queen of clean!!!!!!!!! Marly

I add a little bluing along with my homemade laundry soap as well. That and hanging them in the sun to dry make for gleaming whites. :)
