I was mowing the yard this morning and got stung by a honeybee. My ankle started swelling up so I made a past of baking soda and water and put it on the sting. It's feeling a little better now but I wonder what's the best thing to do for a sting? this is the first time I've been stung in many years. In fact, I can't even remember the last time I was stung. Is there something that works better than baking soda?

Ouch! That's what I always used, though I got stung on Sunday on my lip and we were nowhere to have anything to put on it, so I just used ice. Silly bee was trying to share my Mike's Hard Lemonade, though he wasn't very nice with sharing!

Oh you poor girls. I hate bee stings. I read in an herbal journal that the mullien leaf is great for stings. You get the leaf and make a paste with it. Just smush it somehow and put it on the sting. It draws out the stinger and in no time the swelling is down. This is from a girl on the morning of her wedding. She got stung on the lip and by the time she walked down the aisle no one knew she'd been stung.

I'm a beekeeper, and the most important thing with bee stings is to get the stinger out as quickly as possible-scrape it, pull it, whatever-just get it out. The longer it is in, the more toxins you get, and the more likely you are to have a stronger reaction. The stinger has a "pump" that keeps the toxin moving even after the bee dies.

while I usually don't react much to stings, I got stung on the foot once and it took forever for me to get off my boot, sock, and pull the stinger out. It swelled pretty good and got all red and itchy.

Some things that seem to help were benadryl, and ice packs on the area. Also, soaking my foot in cold water with epsom salts or aveeno bath oatmeal added.

Hope you are feeling better soon!

Owie! It would hurt to get stung on the lip! I did look up mullein and I guess I'll have to plant some in my garden next year as it has all kinds of medicinal uses. I tried to get the stinger out as soon as I realized I'd been stung but it was down in my sock and hard to get to. I actually got stung in two places but only saw one bee. I kind of feel sorry for the bee--I only got stung, but the bee, of course, died. Sniff, sniff, LOL

My youngest son..who is 12....was stung by a wasp on the hand this week...pulling grass growing around the water trough for Mona. We later found a wasp nest under the trough..sigh. We used an ice pack. There was no stinger still in so we didn't have to worry about that. Luckily no reaction. It hurt so bad though. I felt bad for him! I am very allergic..well, I was as a kid anyhow. I havn't been stung in about 25 years..which is amazing since we do have alot of bees, wasps and hornets around. I have to keep an epipen around for just in case.
I am glad to know about the mullein. We have some growing, and it seems that at least one of the kids gets stung each summer..Dalton was probably only the first this year.

I got stung by a bumblebee this week - funny, because I thought they didn't sting. I wore long pants into the garden and it flew up my pant leg - stung me, then came out and kept flying around me like it was trying to sting me again -well actually, it did get me again on the neck, I chased it away, it kept coming back. It was like a nightmare! Finally I threw down my cane (knee surgery last week) and RAN out of the garden to get away from it. I used the baking soda approach and was soon all right.

I wonder why it acted like that?
