I have been going out and working Tala 5 days out of 7. Since she is still too young to ride it is one of the things we can do together. We also take walks around the property, I groom her, and hand graze her.
But tonight was hard to round pen her. I have been doing it so much- I am starting to get a sore spot on my hand from the lunge whip- Soon I will have a calouse there! Of I am actually rather pleased. (Just so you know, the whip doesn't actually whip the horse- it just makes a cracking sound in the air if they aren't moving out fast enough and by switching hand tells them what direction to go.)
Tala is doing great! She is changing directions faster and giving more submission signals as I work her. I am very pleased with both her physical and mental progress. By next year I am going to have a rock star of a horse! :D

I just love the updates of Tala. I can just see her working with you. As you know, I was out for about 9 months and just returned to the MJF site. My question is: Have you ever posted a picture of Tala? If so, please let me know. I'll look for it if you have. I love horses, but don't have one. Years ago, I went riding horses with a friend. The horse I got on turned around and bit my leg. I tell you, I got off that horse without even touching it. I walked home! I'm not afraid of horses, but I don't trust them too much. I would love to beable to get over that. Anyway, I'd love to see a picture of Tala.

Marly, my horse thought he would bite my husband, and right after he did, my husband bent over and bit the horse on the ear. Now if it looks like the horse wants to bite, DH just leans in as if to bite and Q moves his head away. Horses need to be taught manners just like other animals, perhaps moreso since they are so large and can hurt us so much more. I'm sorry you were bitten. If you spend much time watching horses and learning what they are telling you with their body language, you can see a bite coming and a stern No! will often stop it. At least if you recognize a warning sign, you can usually move, block, stop, or prepare yourself. Accidents do happen too. But knowing some critter body language helps a lot! And it is fun to watch them and figure out what they are telling each other and us.
Alee, love some more pictures! :) Tala is bringing you so much happiness already. I'm sure she can tell how proud of her you are. She's going to be quite fine, isn't she?!

Alee, she sounds like a very smart 2 year old. You are doing a great job with her. I am very impressed. And congrats on the calouse, too!

Thanks for the discussion on biting horses. So, the next time I have a chance to ride a horse, if it tries to bite me, I'll bite it first! But, I do believe that is the reason I've never had a yearning to ride a horse.

Thanks gals! Michelle- I promised not to post any pictures of her unless I run it by the breeder first. It is so easy to get BAD pictures of horses and any picture that could be googled of Tala can and will be used as a reference for her sire. So I completely understand! Plus I want future clients to only see Tala in the best light as someday she will be producing foals for me too! :D So I am working on getting some good pictures, but I can privately email you some that aren't the best!

Wow. I do understand that. A lot at stake for breeding high-priced horses. I'd like to see some pictures and I promise to delete them :) cute as they will be, I won't publish them!

So an update with on Fun with Tala-
We have been riding and went on our first real trail ride on Sunday with other horses. We went across the river and rode around on the Island. It was lots of fun. We found out Tala does NOT like crossing even dry creek beds. It's pretty funny actually. Lots of work do do but she is SO smart! I love her so much!

she is so very beautiful. is that your barn in back? when do you get to ride her? i am just starting to train sophie my heifer calf. she has had her halter for 10 days now. she hates it. she also hates when i grab it and make her come. what do you think of training by tying. they say tie the calf from the halter to the fence. when the calf pulls she learns she cant move. do you think this would be good? i have not taken her out of barn on lead yet. i am starting to research and decide how to train to halter. any suggestions would be so appreciated. sophie is 10 weeks now. they grow so fast. her switch in her tail is getting black hairs. happy days sherrye

Hi Sherry-
I have been riding Tala- I originally started this topic a year ago- so now she is old enough.
If you tie your calf, I would tie her not to the fence but to some elastic that is tied to the fence. At least with horses if they pull back and find firm resistance, they can freak out (before they get used to the idea) and can hurt themselves trying to pull against the fixed object. At first you want them to feel the resistance but not feel like they can't move and once they get used to that idea you can switch to a solid rope. When training foals we usually use special elastic horse ties that cost about $20 at a tack/feed store. They have a "quick release" slip latch for emergencies. They are pretty thick- about the thickness of two thumbs with some elastic give. But you could probably make do with some bungee cords that you could modify by bending the hook a bit more or something.
The barn in the back ground is where we board Tala at. I don't own property yet :(

I went riding Tala today. We went to the island and rode around a bit but kept running into downed tree trunks. So we didn't do as much as I has hoping to do. Maybe on Sunday. We also rode around the barn with a friend and her horse. It was so much fun. It's amazing to know that she is letting me ride her so much. She is so smart! I need to get some new pictures of her. She has really grown up quite a bit!

I thought it was maybe time to update this topic! :) We went out to see Tala today who is now fully under saddle. Nora got to ride as did her friend Kate. Tala has turned out to have an amazing affection for children and she truly enjoys giving pony rides to the kids. It is so fun to watch her! Kate's dad even gave Tala a bit of a go- which was hilarious. She was a bit annoyed that she was ponying a much larger person but she did her duty! Some time this week I am going to go out by myself and Tala and I will take to the hills. She really enjoys the trail rides that we go on. I am downloading pictures from my phone and will post some new pictures soon! :)

Thanks Sherry! She is so super sweet! My niece has a lot of fear issues and Tala is really helping her learn to push her boundaries. Nora is doing great and is learning how to talk to Tala and give cues. Tala always acts so careful when I put the kids on her. Then I can climb on and she knows Mom can ride- so off we go to the hills. She is so fantastic. I love her so much!!
