Happy Friday!!
I am loving the August-September issue of the magazine, and I'm especially enjoying the Recipes for Green Housekeeping article. How wonderful to have all these great recipes in one place!
I have a question, though. Is the recipe for Powdered Laundry Soap safe for HE washers? We have the Whirlpool Duet frontloading set. The recipe says that it is "low-sudsing", but I wanted to double check with my farmgirl sisters before making a batch.

I used to own a frontloader, and I loved it. I sold when I moved back to Iowa from Oregon two years ago. Now I've got a toploader--till I can afford to get another frontloader, but I digress.....
I had Sears out once for a routine servicing. The service man said--and of course this was in reference to liquid HE detergent--to only use a tablespoon, 2 at the most, because the washer uses so much less water. Detergent labels tell you to use more than you need, and the detergent manufacturers are there to sell detergent. That said, I know you're talking about homemade detergent or soap, but I am going somewhere with this. Frontloading washers need a lot less soap, so if I were you, I might start out with a tablespoon and see how that works (honestly, I don't use so much detergent in the toploader and my laundry has not suffered). It is possible to get soap built up in the system. One other thing I did to help keep that down, was to run ammonia through the system now and then. Ammonia's a good cleaner and will clean your clothes without leaving a scent. I use it just once in a while, even in the toploader.
I.m looking forward to trying the green cleaning ideas. I have not seen the Aug-Sep issue yet, and will get a copy this weekend.

Thanks so much! Yes, Susan, I love this washer and dryer... when we first got them, my mom and I pulled up 2 chairs in front of the washer to watch it because it was so much quieter than the ancient top loader we'd had before!!! Pure entertainment! Alee, I appreciate the measurement suggestion very much.
