The kids and I went cherry picking this morning and got about 120 lbs of bings and raniers *U* Yum! I ate my fair share while picking...there were consequences- but hey! Cherries only come once a year.

I am pitting them now, and freezing most. Some to share, some for raw jam, fruit leather, and some for the dehydrator and of course...lots just to eat!

Any good cherry recipes for things like muffins, coffee cakes, etc?

Basic muffin batter and add dehydrated cherries ( like you would blueberrys etc), cherry pound cake, again just add dehyd cherries to the batter, pancakes, same thing

Can up some cherry pie filling!! It is so so so nice to have on hand!! I know I have posted the recipe somewhere here...a couple years ago. If you don't find it, and want it, let me know and I will re-post it.

I would love the recipe if you would share. My cherries are not quite ready 1 or 2 days and I'll have my hands full too.

I wish we had some cherries. The birds ate all of them at MIL's house.

I would make cherry juice, jam, just can them with a little sugar for pise and cobbler. My mom used to make an upside down cherry cobbler that was to die for!

My back is killing me! I pitted about 40 lbs. yesterday and froze most of them...I'm a mostly ra girl and can you believe this farmgirl doesn't really know how to can?? I need a mamma!

Well, I made some raw cherry jam and froze most of it too, but had some this morning on my toast *U* YUM!

Wash and pit the cherries (I used Bing)
put them in the Vitamix (or other good blender)
add hony to taste (we don't like a lot)
here you can squeeze a bit of lemon juice in. I didn't have one on hand so I skipped this.
blend well
strain to get some of the juice off and use that for something else
put the jam in a jar and it will stay good in the fridge for about two weeks because honey is a natural preservative.

To freeze it, fill up a clean jar, leaving an inch or two, and screw on the lid. Put it in the freezer- easy! Raw jam all year round. Just take it out and thaw it when you need it.

You could also freeze this in freezer bags of course. Lay them flat and they wouldn't take up much room at all.

Oh my that sounds yummy!

You should get a canning book. Its really pretty easy. Fruits are easy because they are open bath. No pressure needed.

Oh my goodness...you could almost swim in that many cherries! Sounds completely wonderful to me. I love Rainier cherries! I wait for them all year.

Yum!

Wow - I can't imagine having that many cherries. My husband would think he had died and gone to heaven. They are his all-time favorite fruit, but very expensive out here and no trees around that I am aware of. I am always looking for pie filling recipes to can. Would you PLEASE post the recipe again?

I made cherry jam that didn't set. It did seal when I canned it though- which is huge for me since I don't can! I didn't follow instructions...typical of me. I could NOT put that much sugar in the cherries- 4 cups cherries to 3 cup sugar??! No way. Well anyway, tha last issue of Mary Jane's Farm magazine had a divine looking recipe for plum sauce over shortcakes. ALl from scratch- just how we like to cook here. I made it, but instead of plums I used the cherry "sauce" (jam that didn't set) and added nutmeg and butter. It was a hit! Wonderful stuff. The recipe for the homemade whipped topping was too good! I am eating leftovers for breakfast as we speak *U*

I have to admit, I love living in the "fruitbowl" or Washington! The cherries are luscious!

I just bought an OXO cherry pitter today that works like a charm! So easy and quick.

Sunflower Market has Bing cherries on sale for .99 a pound. I am making something. Maybe some cherry rhubarb jam.
