My DH and DD were down doing chores yesterday morning and ......
Well let me first start by telling you I have one banty hen that was given to me ( I have other chickens but one banty hen), well DD hasn't seen her for a couple weeks and we thought something must have eaten her.
........(now back to the story already in progress) they found the banty hen hiding in the combine barn and she had hatched out 8 chicks!
The chicks were about 2 days old or so and so cute. We put them in the brooder and they are awaiting their friends who will be arriving next weeks from Meyer Hatchery. You see I already ordered 25 buffs from them back in April. They were supposed to be here this week but they forgot to print my order so I was assured they would be here next week for sure. Now I'll have 33 new layers come fall!!
We were definitely blessed with our surprise 8 baby chicks!!

I just love banty hens, they will hatch and foster any eggs, mine have hatched turkey poults, ducks and geese, althou, it is kinda funny when them ducklings and goslines won't scratch or roost and want to play in the water, foster mom gets a little frantic. So thats when I pull them from her, don't want any emotional breakdowns from the hens.

What a wonderful surprize! I love my little banties. I had always, my whole life, had big full size chickens, but when we moved here I decided that since I had to start my flock over again (we only brought sheep and rabbits no chickens) I decided to make a change and get banties. I have never been sorry. They are wonderful layers, great moms and they eat so much less...I can have more of them!!! I don't know that I will ever go back to full size chickens. I love the babies...they are so small they look like bumblebees!

I have two banty hens sharing 1 "nest" right now-- actually, my little Blue Dutch bantam decided to start laying eggs in an old "double" rabbit cage (just a small cage with a divider that will carry two rabbits at a time). She laid a few eggs and went broody. Well, a few days later, she started having a tiff with my little Millie Fleur bantam hen and they "fought" over the eggs for awhile. Now, several weeks into it, they are actually sharing the nest, even taking turns on the eggs while one goes to get food and water (which I keep close by for them) and the other one sits on the "nest."
It's funny to watch because they seem to divide the little eggs between them and when one of the hens leaves the nest, the other one will roll her buddies eggs under her feathers to keep them warm! When the other hen returns, she rolls "HER" eggs back under HER feathers! They are too funny, those little birds.
The only thing I worry about is that the eggs might not even be fertile. My 2 banty roosters were early victim of the female fox (God rest her soul) that was stealing my chickens one by one before I even REALIZED it! (I had a beautiful Partridge Cochin and a Millie fleur rooster) Both were gone before the hens made their nest. Maybe the BIG roosters were able to do something? Only time will tell.

Alee, I might sell them, I'm not sure will have to see how many are going to get used with my grandma and parents moving here this summer we'll have more mouths to feed. I might try pickling some too, never had a pickled egg. I've also heard something about old timers putting eggs in a crock in the cellar with a vinegar solution I think it was, to help them last through the winter. ?? don't know, but we'll see.
Marly, if you were my neighbor I'd share. :)
Jenny, You are so right, that's just what they look like, little bumble bees. Mine are black and could even be called little pom-poms.
Kris, Congratulations!! We're mom's together (ha,ha).
Tracy, That is such a cute story, I'd just love to see that. Alee is right you should try to get a video of that.

There is something rewarding about watching a mama hen with babies...teaching them to scratch and chase grasshoppers. Congratulations!
I make quiches and freeze them when I'm overrun with eggs. Let me know if you'd like the recipe.
Oh yeah....I feel a little stupid here, but what does "DD" and "DH" stand for?

Don't feel stupid, it took me a bit to catch on to those and the others also.
I think someone even put a topic on explaining the abbreviations.
DD= Darling (or Dear) Daughter
DH= Darling(or Dear) Husband
DS= Dear(or Darling) Son
Then you will catch on to the SIL(son or sister in law), MIL(mother-in-law), FIL(father-in-law) etc.
I'd love the recipe for your quiche. Do you cook it fully before freezing? Do you thaw completely before reheating?

I would like your recipe too. I have the leghorns but starting to lay pretty good. Will be getting more soon as well as only have 10. The other day I got 8 eggs out of 10 birds!!
May have to check into these as those leghorns EAT!!! The know me as the food lady when I walk in

Hi Kelly, I think it would be best to post the recipe in the recipe section and just make a note here, so if someone were to read this they would wonder about the recipe and where to find it.
....and Kelly, relax!! It isn't a problem if you end up posting something in the wrong place, I've done it, I've seen others do it, and we're still here, we didn't get kicked off. It's okay to make mistakes, I do it all the time it feels like.
