The garden at my school that I wrote in about before? We've got bigger problems than weeds now....
I had nothing but minor storms at my house 15 minutes from school, but when I got to the school this morning, I couldn't believe my eyes. Basically....
Everything with leaves looks like someone took a weedwacker to it. Nothing left but stems. Things like swiss chard, lettuce, spinach, collard greens, broccoli, etc. are nothing but little stalks sticking up. The tomatoes, green peppers, and eggplant are all gone as well. I couldn't even find the little basil plants we planted.
Stuff that normally isn't affected by hail? Gone. The onions, garlic, etc. are flattened. I would say about 90% of what the kids planted is gone.
The saddest part was that a killdeer was nesting near the green peppers, and I found her dead next to the nest with the eggs all smashed. That's about the point that I started crying and left.
When another teacher and I went back later to see what plants we needed to get we also found some dead mice and chipmunks.
I guess on the bright side, when people at school heard what happened, they really stepped up. Student council gave us $300.00 to buy new plants, two local nurseries gave us plants free or at cost, and a lot of teachers signed up with me to bring there students to the garden to plant the stuff tomorrow. Still, after all the work we've put into it, it was a bit heartbreaking.
At least all of the thistle got flattened as well......

I am so sorry, my mom had a loss like that a few weeks ago in Missouri, only it was rain, 2 1/4 ins in 40 minutes, flattened everything in her veggy garden and her flowers also, she was heartbroke
