Hi there! I'm so glad to have found MaryJane's magazine and this forum! I grew up in Moscow, out on the Twin Buttes--the "skyline" of the Buttes and Moscow Mountain is the backdrop of heaven to me. While I now live just 300 miles away, it is far enough that I don't get back as often as I'd like. At the end of this month, I'll return for a few days to help my aunt and uncle pack and sort thirty years of their life in Moscow, as they plan a move to be closer to their children. Perhaps I can arrange a visit to MaryJanesFarm!
My name is Nikki, and I live on five acres in a small Idaho town--pretty enough for high desert, but it has taken awhile for it to feel like home to my heart, which is attached to the rolling hills, timberland, and rain of the Palouse. I homeschool our five children, and expect another in January. Our land, which was once old orchard, has been ours for three years as we've worked it, trying to put some life back into the leeched soil. I have yet to see a worm on the place, but hope that as we compost and feed the soil, they will find a home here as well.
We have horses and cats, and plan on chickens, sheep, and dogs as we add fences and such. I collect handmade furniture and old quilts, and love to make treasure from what others consider to be trash. I also enjoy quilting, especially making two-color quilts using classic patterns that bring back the nostalgia of my grandmother, spending winters at her quilting frames on her 20-acre farm in Moscow.
I have loved MaryJanesFarm magazine, discovering it at a Boise bookstore. The Plateful issue's cover caught my eye, and as I browsed through it I recognized names of friends, acquaintances, and even a professor I knew from back when. I look forward to acquainting myself with like-minded folks, and to learning from you all! |

Hi Nikki and welcome! You'll find lots of interesting, helpful and nice folks here on this forum. Although we are from many places our dreams are very similar. Sounds like you will be right at home here. We are from all parts of the country, but we all love MJF's magazine and her view on life. I look forward to hearing about your life growing up in that area. How big of a place is Moscow?
I have visited Idaho several times, and it is so beautiful. We stayed once in Sun Valley, and I poked all around Hailey and Ketchum. And we drove around the southern part of the state and went through Idaho Falls. I drove into the Sawtooth Natl Forest and saw the most beautiful fox I had ever seen. Anyway, I have great memories of Idaho, and look forward to hearing more about your home state.

I want to welcome you too NIKKI,
I think that with time and all those wonderful animals you will soon enough have all the worms you need. For some reason worms just seem to come where there is horse manuer. I have a worm box and raise worms for their castings so I can make worm tea for inoculating my plants that are prone to mildew and fungus here in the rainy side of the state. You can order worms by the pound from large worm farms and begin a worm breeding box of your own adding the castings and eggs to your garden as they multiply. I have had to do this as well. We seem not to have very many here when we moved here. Do not know the reason but after 6 years I am seeing lots of them now. I just add all of my kitchen compost to the box 2 times a week and by the time I get out to add more the box is just full of rich black soil and more worms than you can count in a spoon full. I got the how to do its from a book at the library called The Worm Book by Loren Nancarrow and Janet Hogan Taylor. We got our first worms from Yelm Earthworm and castings Farm

Gosh, all I have to do is put a spade in our ground and two worms come wiggling to the surface. I guess we must have lots of what they like here in the North Flordia soil - probably mildew and mold spores and stuff which is not really good! Any time we go fishing, all we do is dig a little and we have bait! Fat worms! I have often wondered if they are pests that will eat my garden - are they good?

Welcome Nikki. I love Idaho too..lived in Teton county as a child for a couple years and in McCall for a year about 20 years ago. It is my second favorite state!!

Where did you say you were from? Good old Moscow? Do you know where Kendrick is?
My husband is studying at the U of I in Moscow. I am hoping he goes on studying there for the rest of my life. That way, we can stay right here. We had five acres of rainy heaven in Western WA, where we did our farmer thing until moving here. Living here is like letting the calves out of the barn in early spring. We jumped for joy and kicked up our heels at all the glorious space. Couldn't go back to old place now without feeling hemmed in (not to mention the non-stop rain)

Magi, you said "Living here is like letting the calves out of the barn in early spring." That's how both DH and I feel about N. Idaho. Moscow is where we met when we were both students at the U of I; we would like to go back there and retire when the time comes.
Yep, I know where Kendrick is. I remember huckleberry hunting thereabouts when I was younger. I just love the rolling fields and wooded patches--how lucky you are to live there! |

Welcome Nikki, I just saw another Idaho Farmgirl under members and just had to say Hi. You are in a lovely area, I have always liked Emmett. Used to pick cherries there when I was a young mom with two babies (those babies are now 38 and 37 years old-how time flies). I have been living in Idaho City for the past 30 plus years now and we have a farmgirls chapter called Mountain Farmgirls of Idaho City. Just wanted to say Hi and I too make things from what other people have no use for. I am getting an Etsy site up and will be listing some "remade" items so hope you take a peek sometime.
