Hi, I'm new here and have loved reading all the posts. I bought my first copy of Mary Janes Farm mag back in Nov and fell in love with it. I've read and reread them and finally have a subscription. For as long as I can remember I have wanted to be a farm girl. I grew up in the suburbs of Portland, OR. I took an agriculture class in high school and loved that. Nothing better than pitchin' steaming hay in the early morning. But, farming wasn't in my mothers plan and I abandoned the idea of having my own farm. But, the dream never left me. Nine yrs ago I found my birth family and I discovered that farming was a deep tradition in my blood line. My great grandparents were successful farmers in Des Moines, IO, my grandfather and his 13 sibs were farmers. I have never been "modern". I don't even own a microwave (to my teenagers despair). I love cooking from scratch, sewing, quilting (no machine quilting), canning, pretty much anything done by hand. My friends don't get it. They don't understand why I would go to the trouble to make bread from scratch for sandwiches (even use my grandmothers old manual hand mixer), or a soup that doesn't come from a can. They love the applesauce or the jams that I make, but their response generally is "lot of work for so little". They just don't get it. Then when I tell them that we are going to buy land and raise chickens and goat, there go the rolling eyes! I think we have to get back to these simple things in life, the slower things. For ourselves, our children, and our planet.
I'm so happy to have found this place. I identify with so many of you and your posts. Glad to know that I'm not the only one out there. |

You will fit in nicely. Jump right in as there is a lot of girls here with some or all those intrests. I do all those things to only I use some of technology.
People don't realize how easy canning is.Yet they all want to enjoy.
I often say I wish life was like in pioner days because the world was so different. Mind you they had there tough times and we have learned much from them.
We have progressed and so has hate and greed.
Maybe there just aren't enough farmgirls in the world.
Enjoy the site you will love it. Full of info and girls with the same interests. |

Welcome Wendy from your neighbor in ID.
I too use some technology, but I do a lot of what you do also. We have cattle, horses, mule, goats (meat not dairy), chickens, dogs, and cats.
I love this lifestyle and would never want to go back to Corporate America. Been there, done that. My son moved away to the "burbs" as he didn't like the rural life, but my daughter is 11 and she loves it. You couldn't get her away from here. Kids definitely grow up with better values, more respect, and are better people when they come from the country.
Well, I'm rambling, but I sure am glad you joined us. You really will like it here. And you aren't alone, we have all gotten the "rolled eyes" look and the "what are you crazy" speech. You are NOT alone!!!

Wendy, welcome from Ga. I aslo do a lot of the manual, too. Hardly ever use my hand mixer, have a manual can opener that I hardly use b/c I have jars. We have milk goats and 2 calves, ducks, guineas and a rooster. I am going to get more hens hopefully this week.
I noticed you said your grandfather had 13 siblings. So did mine. I know it was common back then to have alot of kids. My great grandparents were from around that area. Our family name is Schwab. With that many kids in a family there are hundreds of relatives all over. So I just thought I'd throw the name out there. Might find a cousin here someday. Who knows?
